Ds2 has suddenly developed a stammer

jimblejambles · 18/07/2010 14:48

Ds2 is nearly 3 and over the past few days has started to stammer (or maybe stutter I am not sure what the difference is).

He is repeating a whole word usually at the beginning of a sentence.

At first I thought he was just getting excited about whatever random thing caught his imagination but it is creeping in more and more.

Is this something I should go to the dr or health visitor about or leave it and see if it disappears on it own?

Thank you

My dd has this at the moment. It started when her dad and i split up. I have never mentioned it to her or helped her get the words. I keep eye contact and am patient. She is also seeing a speech therapist. They say its a phase. Its like she has so much in her head to say but her mouth just cant keep up

AnyFucker · 18/07/2010 14:56

my dd did this

we got a referral to a SALT, but she said it was extremely common around this age, not to worry, not to draw attention to it and it will disappear in a few months

she was absolutely right

My two year old does this - it gets much worse when she is tired, seems like her brain can't find the words quickly enough, has been about the same for last 6 months. No advice for you - I personally am not worried atm and am just not drawing attention to it. I feel I will know if it gets to be a problem and when to seek help. Frustrating to watch though isn't it.

I guessed what age your DS would be before I opened this thread and i was right Both my DSs did this at around that age and it was gone within a year. I didn't draw attention to it.

AnyFucker · 18/07/2010 15:18

yes, SD, I guessed the age of the child correctly too

NorbertDentressangle · 18/07/2010 15:22

DS did this at the same sort of age too.

It just disappeared of its own accord.

Thanks for all the replies. We have just moved so meeting new health visitor in a couple of weeks I will mention it then unless it gets worse.

I was going to ask if there had been any changes in your life recently? My son did this at a very similar age (2 yrs and 8 months) just after we moved house. It stopped after a couple of weeks but reoccured when his baby brother was born. (at just under three years) Again it didn't last long. I mentioned it to our health visitor and she said if it was a stammer or stutter we would need to be referred to a speech therapist. But after she had listened to it she said it was neither - I think she called it a speech affectation. So I would mention it to your health visitor, but probably it's nothing to worry about and your DS will soon stop it, especially once life has settled down a bit after your move.
