What could be wrong with my daughter?

A month ago my dd (5) had a virus, not sure what, high temp, rash, vomited a couple of times, lasted about five days. She seemed ok afterwards, aside from a bit tired, and was back in school for a couple of days and then she suddenly started needing to wee really frequently. She said it didn't hurt at all,she just felt all the time as though she needed to wee.The doc checked her urine and sent it off for testing but it was clear of any infection or inflammatory cells.Still she was going to the loo all the time apart from at night when she was sleeping well. Then I rang the out of hours Doc and the nurse suggested she could have thread worms, apparently in girls they get into the urethra and vagina and cause a lot of irritation,so just in case I treated us all with worm pills.A few days later she seemed a bit better so back to school, but she was very tired, and still going to the loo more than normal,so I kept her home. She had one full day last week in school,(she has missed nearly a month),and that seemed ok,saw the doc again on Friday who thought she could be a bit anaemic hence the tiredness as she's had a growth spurt, but today the weeing is rather worse again. She is also fiddling around with her pants a lot as if she is itchy or uncomfortable, but she says she just feels like she needs to wee.No sign of redness anywhere.I am not sure now if she is just worrying about needing the loo,or if she really does, but it is getting me worried.Any ideas anyone?

Thanks Sparkle. She does wear pants and pjs to bed anyway.DH just checked her poo(uggh) as she did one before bed ,but there didn't seem to be any worms in there,at least there was nothing obvious. She isn't itchy, but the last two nights she has even woken up in the night to wee, which she has never done, ever, she has been dry at night since she was 24m.Does an irritated bladder resolve itself? I am worried about her having to have blood tests or being stressed out more about it.(The GP appointment is tomorrow afternoon anyway ).

My first thought was diabetes too

SpawnChorus · 19/07/2010 20:10

Hellymelly - myy DD (also 5) has recently had similar symptoms (i.e. frequent weeing and a bew bedwetting episodes plus a bit of pant-fiddling). Her pee was given the all clear, but the doc recommended putting her on ABs anyway, as apparently the dip tests aren't all that reliable.

I was a bit sceptical (I'm not a fan of ABs unless definitely necessary), but they worked. Her frequent peeing stopped within about 36/48 hours of starting the ABs.

HTH

A few bedwetting episodes!

hellymelly · 19/07/2010 20:18

Spawnchorus (I love that name),that is reassuring, although they didn't just dip her urine ,they did send it off to the lab, twice, and each time it was completely clear.I'm obviously really hoping it will be something easy to sort out.She breaks up at school tomorrow, she went in today and was ok,she came home for lunch but she happily stayed for the day and didn't seem too worried about needing to wee so often. At least now its the holidays and she can get lots of rest, she looks pale and worn out ,and she is a very very slender child anyway so that only adds to it.I just want to see her back to normal.Last night she had leaked a bit before getting to the loo,not enough to wet the bed but enough to go through to her pj bottoms, and she's never done that, she usually has the bladder of a camel.

If it was an irritable bladder would the over the counter medication you buy for cystitis (neutralises urine) work I wonder?. Ask a pharmacist if it is suitable for little ones (on second thoughts would probl not give without GP advice - ignore that!) I'm wondering where the kidney/ bladder angle comes in?. If children have kidney dysfunction it would have shown up long before now, and urgency/frequency is not one of the symptoms. Equally bladder abnormality not related to infection does not appear out of the blue. Inflammation of the urethra (the short tube coming out from the bladder) causing discomfort and not full emptying the bladder is a possibility but there would probably be acute discomfort on weeing. Frankly I dont know what they would scan for apart from incomplete emptying of the bladder.

I take it she doesn't have thrush?

Also some medicine particularly anti histimines may have an adverse affect on the bladder.

Let us know please what your GP thinks as DD is def. a mystery!

SpawnChorus · 19/07/2010 20:26

helly - they did send DD's pee off to the labs too, and said they'd be in touch if anything interesting showed up. They didn't get in touch. I'm not sure if that means there was no bacteria at all or just no interesting bacteria I didn't bother following it up as the problem was solved.

hellymelly · 19/07/2010 20:33

How would I know if she had thrush? She's not itchy,so is that a no for thrush? Her vulva looks normal,no excessive redness or discharge. She says it doesn't hurt to wee at all,but I imagine it must feel slightly irritated as she feels she needs to wee so often. It really is a mystery so SpawnChorus I'm really hoping that its the same as your DD.

Well it really does sound remarkably similar. I hope you get it sorted soon - I was mystified and worried too!

tw1nkley · 19/07/2010 22:28

Helly, did you speak to the gp?

hellymelly · 19/07/2010 22:34

tw1kley I couldn't get an appointment until tomorrow, annoyingly its the male GP as she prefers the female one,but she isn't in this week at all.He is fine and he has seen her before but she is more chatty with the woman doctor.I don't suppose it will matter much though.

OP posts:
tw1nkley · 19/07/2010 22:37

I know what you mean, it is annoying but it wont matter. Just push for a scan. Please.

SpawnChorus · 20/07/2010 08:13

tw1nkley - out of curiosity, what would they be looking for with a scan?

SparkleRainbow · 20/07/2010 12:56

I guess they would be looking for any abnormalities with the kidneys, bladder or urethra etc, any swelling or any indications of any clinical reason for the constant weeing.I think irritated bladders resolve themselves, but I do not know for sure, maybe a short course of AB or low dose of steroids would help to reduce any inflamation.....I am clutching at straws here, I hope the GP has some useful suggestions. Good luck this afternoon.

belleymum · 20/07/2010 12:57

My DD had similar symptoms to yours, leading me to believe she had worms.
Itching, increased urination and out of character bed-wetting. There were no signs of worms in many a poo examining session so we went to the GP after considering cystitis.

I felt guilty for leaving it so long but eventually an anal swab was taken.
She had a strep infection requiring antibiotics.

hellymelly · 20/07/2010 21:10

Well I saw the GP today and he doesn't want to do anything yet.He said that the urine tests were clear of anything indicative of a kidney issue, inflammation in the bladder,or any infection. His feeling is that something (possibly a scented bubble bath I'd used, possibly a virus)triggered the original episode and that now her bladder is used to emptying frequently and needs time to settle down again. He suggested giving it two weeks, but going back sooner if anything changes for the worse. She has slightly swollen glands in her neck still, but is otherwise well in herself, less tired than last week.
belleymum did they take the swab right away? Where was the strep infection, was it in her bladder?

OP posts:
tw1nkley · 20/07/2010 21:27

Something that was missed with my relative because a scan was never thought to be necessary. Irritated bladder was assumed, to the extent of 2 operations to "rectify" the problem. Reading through the descriptions of the problems this little girl has been having and ignoring the worms hypothesis, from my memory its an identical description.

I realise that irritated bladder/ strep infection is the most likely conclusion, but after what we went through I would want a scan for peace of mind........

Now lets hope I haven't stressed out Helly, because thats the last thing I wanted to do.

If any of you ladies/hairy truckers thinks I may have done feel free to report my post to get it deleted.

hellymelly · 20/07/2010 21:58

No tw1inkley,that is fine,I am grateful for all help and suggestions. The GP was really sure that nothing needs to be done at this stage, but if it goes on without improving then I think he will start bloods/scans etc.He just didn't want to put her through anything traumatic when he is pretty sure that there is nothing to worry about.I hope you don't mind me asking, but what was the issue with your relative?

Oh,I'm very sorry to hear that.I hope that he or she gets a transplant soon. The GP said they had checked for kidney function in my DD through the urine sample,so far it all looked fine, there were no indicators that the kidneys were under stress, but I will be back to the GP if this continues. She slept through last night and her teacher said she went to the loo less frequently this morning, but this afternoon she did go a few times,so its wait and see. Thanks for letting me know,it is very kind of you.

belleymum · 22/07/2010 08:20

My DDs swab was taken on our first visit to the GP and as it was an anal swab I assume it was skin related/bottom not bladder. She didn't have a urine test at all.

Peace of mind is always good and tw1nkley I can understand your concern, my niece has a very unusal condition and I used to work in the field.

hellymelly · 22/07/2010 22:23

Well she seems to be a lot better today, she hasn't been to the loo anywhere near as much and she also seems less tired so I'm keeping my fingers crossed that whatever was/is going on is on the way out.Now I just have to deal with the fact that she is devastated to be leaving her lovely reception teacher and cried herself to sleep two nights on the trot (not alone I might add, with me cuddling her and talking to her)..
