Cradle cap at 2.5y ?

Hi, I need to pick your brains (and not my son's scalp...)

My DS has a load of little patches of thickened slightly brown oily skin all over the top of his head. They kind of flake off with brushing, washing and don't seem to itch or bother my DS at all.

I don't remember cradle cap being like this (this gross...) anything else it could be?

I tried putting olive oil on it overnight then shampooing it off-it worked a bit but it makes a lot of mess, and TBH I just don't have the time in the mornings-any other suggestions?

dd has it too. she's 4. she won't let me attack it. it just stays there, sometimes more sometimes less. can't see it much, i have a range of hairstyles to suit where the patch is!

Wow! Thank you for being so quick! I thought it only affected small babies!

Just had a quick look on the net-I'm going to try borage oil if I can find it-people seem to be getting good results with it.

Am also going to try to stop picking at it...

Ds had this until after he started school. Eventually we went to the doctor and were prescribed some shampoo whose name I've forgotten. we used it a couple of times a week for several months and it went. Doc said it wasn't cradle cap but was something similar. Shampoo smelt of vosene (remember that?) and reminded me of bath night in the 70's.

I got this big tip about cradle crap from some friends, do you rinse your sons hair with the bath water after washing it?

If you do, apparently the soap residue can build up on their head and can cause the cradle cap?

I rinse most off with bath water, the do a couple of rinses with clean water, it worked for me??

Summer holidays coming up so you can try this.... Put vaseline all over the affected area every night for a week before bed (put a towel on his pillow of something). Then have a bath in the morning, use your normal shampoo and a baby toothbrush (the really soft ones) to scrub the patch and rinse well. Then comb out the bits with a fine comb. It will be gone in a week. I had to do this, recommended by my gp, for my baby, and I will be doing it again come the summer hols for my 7 year old who has developed a patch again. Worked wonders
