Wrist hurting 16 months after breaking it

DD (10) broke her wrist March 2009 which after being manipulated under GA healed normally. 16 months later she is getting throbing/sharp pain when she uses it to write and somtimes with certain movements. Is this normal and if not does anyone know what is causing this? It seems to be causing her quite a lot of pain.

Alternatively, if you have broken your wrist/arm in the past, do you ever get pain in it? I have never broken a bone so I don't know if its normal. Any reassurance would be really appreciated.

Thanks Pixie, I will get it checked with GP. You always seem to have an answer for my posts

Get a ref for physio; I broke my arm badly 8 months ago and have no pain, though I did benefit from physio (couldn't twist my wrist completely before that).

Thanks ragged. Both DH and I have never broken anything, except noses and teeth so have nothing to compare it to.

We went to the GP today and she has referred DD for an X ray so will see what happens. So glad I took her.

Oh dear , well, glad that you are making some progress.

I have broken left arm twice and right arm once (last break, quite painful at the time) -- no long term pain from any of those.

My guess is she'll have something like a bone spur to deal with: a nuisance, but very curable.

We had the results of the x ray today and they are all clear which is good news. Doc said could be inflamed tendons and told her not to use her hand for two weeks (easier said than done). If not better in two weeks will refer us to hospital to multi skeletal person (think that's physio?)

I broke my wrist 3 1/2 years ago and had it manipulated under GA . Still hurts occassionally and apparently I rub it a lot when I am tired. I did find that using a power ball see here helped a lot. Also lent it to friend who had nasty car crash and he said it helped his wrist strength a lot.

MegGriffin · 24/07/2010 21:13

Thanks trumpton, I will look in to that.

Ask them for an arthrogram www.radiologyinfo.org/en/info.cfm?pg=arthrog, they may do one anyway but it will help to show up any problems with the soft tissue/ligaments.

MegGriffin · 24/07/2010 22:29

Thanks herbietea and belle. I am really hoping rest will sort it out although it is almost imposible for her to remember not to use it. She has had a tubigrip on all day and did say although still hurting it was helping. I have everything crossed for a recovery but if not the information is really helpful. Her doctor seems quite pro active although goodness knows how long she will have to wait if referred.

She has also been getting numbness/tingling in her middle fingers on and off, very strange.
