She came home from Alton Towers yesterday.
She was very tired-although that was probably because she'd been on every ride she could possibly get on!!!
She had a swollen tongue...either side of it and slightly swollen towards the end.
Her "taste buds"were slightly reddened and the inner part of her bottom lip had a few bumps on it with a white patchy stuff on them. One side of her throat was aching although she can't tell whether that's on the inside or the outside...it hurts to touch. She said her tongue started bleeding this morning in the middle????
The inner bottom lip appears to have calmed down a little but I'm concerned. She's gone to school cos she was determined she was. But,she looked really tired and pale.Anyone got any ideas?

allergic reaction to something??

thisisyesterday · 13/07/2010 09:34

or oral thrush, actually that ties in with the white patches

cutekids · 13/07/2010 09:35

hi
does oral thrush cause the tongue to swell?

Sorry, bloody crap links!

Geographical Tongue

cutekids · 15/07/2010 01:52

thanks for that.
Her tongue seemed to improve and then flared up again. It's kind of swollen all around the edges, which I sometimes get when I've had something acidic.Doc.thinks it may be a viral infection.Just hope it's nothing serious.

i would agree that it sounds viral.

differentnameforthis · 15/07/2010 08:30

Cutekids, if you react to acidic stuff, it sounds like geographic tongue. This can be worse when you have a virus.

cutekids · 15/07/2010 09:56

how long does it usually take for it to calm down?
she said it was painful again this morning but won't tell me if it's better or worse cos she's afraid i'm going to cart her back off to the docs again......and it's the last couple of days in school and she doesn't want to miss out!!!
(She had a few of her friends turn on her a few days ago in school and I was wondering if it could be stress-related...she does sometimes get ulcers.)
Having said that,my 11yr old son reminded me yesterday that he had something similar a few weeks ago ( i thought it was due to the amount of ketchup he puts on his food!).
When I said his couldn't have been the same,he replied that it probably was but that he was a boy and didn't make such a fuss lol!
Have to admit though,it is worrying me a little. She's had a few little problems recently.
I presume if she had routine blood-tests done a couple of months ago, that they would still go by those results? (They came back okay)

It (if it is GT) can be irritated by spicy foods, stress, illness, smoking, alcohol etc.

There is no known remedy to it, but it can go away for ages & reoccur.

It is hard to say how long it lasts for, because foods/drinks can irritate it, therefore make an attack prolonged.

It may be worth keeping a diary to see if it happens again, what the common link is. It is also affected by hormonal changes.

differentnameforthis · 15/07/2010 14:29

Oh & it can run in families, to a lesser extent in males. Typical, huh!
