DD is 9 and I suspect she has thrush. Do I have to take her to the gp or can the pharmasist give me something for her?? It is causing her some discomfort and having had it myself I want to help her?

Don't think you can get anything over the counter for a child - you really need the GP to diagnose her.

bargainhuntingbetty · 12/07/2010 21:49

thank you

you can probably get canesten over the counter for her

bargainhuntingbetty · 12/07/2010 21:50

i will call the pharmacy in the morning as she is scared about a gp 'looking at her bits'

ahh sorry, no it does say on it that it shouldn't be used without a prescription on children under 10

that said, if she is nearly 10 you might be able to get some?

MoonUnitAlpha · 12/07/2010 21:54

If it's the first time she's had it, it is important the doctor sees her just to confirm it's thrush and nothing else.

Do you have a nice female GP you could see? Or maybe a practice nurse?

SpanishHarlot · 12/07/2010 21:59

get some cranberry juice either in juice or tablets and use Canestan. The strong Canestan with Hydrocortesone is best but use only for a couple of days.

It could be very distressing to see doctor at her age, but you need to be the judge of that.

In the meantime apply some Sudocrem to relieve the itching and get her to drink lots of water

my dd had the 1% canesten prescribed for her when she was 4 ad had thrush.

diggingintheribs · 12/07/2010 22:17

you must take to gp - my friend suspected her daughter had thrush, doctor didn't even look once she said it. ended up not getting any better on the cream and little girl ended up with fever etc.

when gp did look it was something different and anti biotics cleared it up

I understand she might be embarrassed - is there a female doctor? I just wory about self diagnosing now!

If it is thrush, it will go away a lot quicker (and be less likely to return) if you limit the yeast and sugar in her diet to as close to zero as possible. Thrush feeds on them.
As Pixie says, it can also be a symptom of other things so best to see GP. No cake with the coffee though

Need to see GP for prescription and diagnosis. even adults should always see a dr the first time before self treating to rule out vaginosis which is more common than thrush and similar presentation.

Hi I took her to the gp and he confirmed it was Thrush from what I described. He didnt even look. He did say that it could be something else so gave me a sample bottle and an appointment for the nurse for Monday if its not any better. Hopefully it is just Thrush and the cream will fix it. Thanks for all the replies.
