Worried about my babies legs/hips

Ds2 is 7 months old and I have noticed he has got one leg longer than the others also he has got uneaven leg creases and it looks like his knee faces outwards he also stands on the side of that foot I have looked online and it all points to hip problems but he has had his hips checked when he was a baby.
I mentioned it to gp who said he was bow legged and all babies are it will go when he's walking but I'm not convinced but not sure what to do next.

I'd pop back to the GP and ask for an orthopedic referal. It sounds like femeral antiversion, it's just where one of the femurs is rotated, if it is this then the earlier it's looked at the better.

Hope this helps.

I've just googled that but his knee kind of faces outwards not in and its like he can't put weight on that foot so just puts a few of his toes down iyswim.
He also never has his leg straight it is always bent resting to the side.
The more I type the more convinced I am there is something not right

You need to take him back to the GP and ask for an orthopedic referal. There's a few things it could be, like hip dysplasia but it's hard to tell as I can't see it so you will be better off getting an expert opinion.

Please try not to panic though, it'll get sorted.

alibobins · 11/07/2010 21:01

Thankyou will try and see a differernt GP next week

Be insistent on a referal, it's best to get this checked out.

Ds's hips were okay at birth but not okay at 6 months - identified as being hypermobile which couldn't have been spotted at birth. Insist on a paedatric orthopedic referral (we had to go private as not one in our PCT).

Managed to get an appointment at 10.30 today

I hope all is OK

alibobins · 12/07/2010 12:08

Well doctor said there is a definite deformity of the left leg/hip she also wrote something about his knee and measured an inch difference between lengths she is really angry that the other gp didn't notice.
We have a referal to an othopedic doctor.

Don't know if I'm more worried now someone else has noticed

It'll be OK, it's alot better to get any joint/bone problems sorted out early on, at least it's being spotted and something is being done now.

The orthopedic doctors will have a look, they will do some measurements, probably some x-rays and will take it from there.

You're not to far from me, I'm in Derbyshire, if there's anything you need then just shout. I know it must be worrying for you, my son has problems with his legs. I was told last year that he was looking at surgery but he's OK thankfully.

Thank you I'm on the Notts/Derby border.
Hopefully the wait won't be too long I'm due back at work in September.

You can bump the referal time by paying for an initial private appointment, he can be seen this week/next week if you are able to do this. You can then request that any further investigations and appointments are NHS so you won't have to pay.

alibobins · 12/07/2010 12:44

How do I do that?

OP posts:
belledechocolatefluffybunny · 12/07/2010 12:49

Google them first to make sure they have an orthopedic consultant there, then you just phone the hospital up and ask them for an appointment. You will get to see the consultant rather then a reg, they will ask for your GP's details so they can get hold of the referal, you will book it there and then. You just need to remember to say that you want any tests and further consultations on the NHS. Ask about the cost for the initial consultation, it's between £100 -£250 depending on speciality.

Personally, I don't think his condition is going to change alot within the next 8 weeks or so, you may be better off waiting for an NHS appointment to come through, the waiting lists around here are not too bad.

alibobins · 12/07/2010 12:52

We are off on holiday in 2 weeks so think I will wait until we get back.
Think the referal will be to Queens Med in Notts.
He is already under a pead would he be able to move things along quicker?

Ds was under the care of the orthopedics here, his physio thought he needed checking over by a paed though so I had to go to my GP for a paeds referal I work in the NHS and things like this confuse me! The paed won't be able to speed it up, you could always ask though, no harm in trying hey!

alibobins · 16/07/2010 20:36

Left a message with secretary I suppose it's a waiting game now.

Appointment came through this morning 23rd Sept seems a long wait.
Referal letter says T&O clinic and to take a pair of shorts.
