I seem to be reading my boy (4.6) all the stuff I had - pippi longstocking, mrs pepperpot, and a bit of Roald Dahl - what else is good and a bit newer? He likes chapter books.

DD is 3.11 and we have just started on this kind of thing. She is enjoying Harry Potter (with some explanation), and we also did a slightly simplified version of Anne of Green Gables during our holiday that she LOVED. So much so that I have just bought her the DVD of the 80s TV series as a birthday present..

I know Enid Blyton is a bit naff, but I have also just bought her The Magic Far Away Tree as I think she will LOVE it.

Confess to being a little bit as to why a 3.11 year old is being introduced to Harry Potter, bearing in mind the dark element running throughout all of the books, even the earlier ones, but, hey ho, every child is different.

So far as your child is concerned, Cockles, you could try the Jeremy James books by David Henry Wilson, also 'The Hodgeheg' by Dick King-Smith, 'Flat Stanley' by Jeff Brown, 'The Magic Treehouse' series by Mary Pope-Osborne, or the 'Troll Trouble' series by Alan MacDonald. The content is age appropriate but the writing is far better than series such as Beast Quest etc.

I've just started reading My Father's Dragon, which my nearly 5 year old is enjoying. I also found some interesting read aloud suggestions on this website.
