Audiobooks for a 4yr old

My 4yr old DD has started listening to audiobooks as she goes to sleep (she is having a phase of being a bit scared to go to sleep on her own, I think the audiobooks keep her company). But we have a very small collection at the moment and I would like to add to it.

She likes things like Charlie and Lola, Angelina Ballerina, Winnie the Witch, The Gruffalo etc, so they are obvious choices, but I'm looking for ideas for things which are a little bit different and will last her for a couple of years.

I have looked at Paddington Bear and Winnie the Pooh both read by Stephen Fry (I could listen to his voice forever), do you think they are a bit old for a 4year old though?

Also have you got any other suggestions?

Dd1 (5) likes Naughty Little Sister, Cat in the Hat, Little Princess (sometimes), a famous five one

DD1 (3) likes Fat Cat on the mat, The Nutcracker, James and the Giant Peach and I Can Trick a Tiger.

She also likes to listen to Colours are brighter and Hello children everywhere, but they are music.

HTH!

DS (4) loves the Just so stories.

What does she listen to the stories on? I've downloaded quite a lot of free podcasts for DS, which he listens to in the car.

DS (5) loves the winnie the pooh ones so they should be ok. Have you tried the library, ours has loads. Another place in greenmetropolis.com Got DD matilda from there by mistake recently thinking i was buying the book it has been a big hit but she is 7.

DD didn't like Paddington on audiobook until quite a bit older (maybe 6?).

We were given this cd when dd was about 4 which sounds hideously new age in the description, but actually it was fantastic at helping her sleep when she was having problems dropping off. Each section starts off "Imagine you are Cinderella . . . " or whatever, with very relaxing music, and then suggests nice things to think about (skipping the nasty bits of the fairy tales!!!).

Thanks for your suggestions.

She listens on a CD player in her room.

We listen to audio books in the car all the time and my 3 and 4 year old sons absolutely love Roald Dahl. There is an audiobook of four of his stories - Fantastic Mr Fox, The Enormous Crocodile, Esio Trot and The Giraffe and the Pelly and Me - read by the likes of Stephen Fry and Hugh Laurie. They (and I) adore it!

The Paddington Bear ones are lovely, my DDs are 3 and 5 and love them. They also like The Owl Who Was Afraid of the Dark and have just got Princess Mirrorbelle which is going down well. Both of these quite good in length for bedtime as Owl is quite a short story anyway (it's from the picture book version rather than the chapter book), and the Princess Mirrorbelle one is a complete story per chapter, so if it's getting a bit late and I don't want them listening for ages, they're allowed a chapter or two rather than the whole CD. Am probably going to get some Dahl ones soon, although my almost-4-year-old finds it a bit hard to concentrate for more than a couple of chapters whereas my older girl wants half the book in one night!

Another one here for the Just So stories, DD (4) loves them. She annouced the other day that she had 'great endeavour and sagacity' in a very serious voice. I don't think I was meant to laugh!

paddington and winne the pooh are fine and dandy for a 4 yr old. my son likes them and so do his parents, MUCH better audiobook s than some of teh TV stuff like Bob and postman pat.
Roald Dahl ones can be good, we like The Enormous crocodile, The Giraffe the Pelly and me is a Favourite and Fantastic Mr fox went down well.

I might try Jeremy strong after reading this thread. We use Audio books in the car as I commute one day a week with boy so he is in car for an hour at a time before and after a full day at preschool.
