Had forgotten what a wonderful writer Rosemary Sutcliff was.

Does anyone else know of her

Yup - one of my favourite books as a kid & a good one to recommend to boys as well as girls. Also fairly historically accurate which makes a change.

You Have to read 'Warrior Scarlet' by R.S!

it's very moving, about a bronze age boy (Drem) with a crippled arm and how he learns to be a good hunter and gain acceptance nto his clan!

I haven't read it since I was a kid but it has stayed with me!

I was in love with Marcus as a child - I couldn't bear to accept he was just a fictional character! I've lost count of the number of times I've read it - it's sheer brilliance

I loved the Lantern Bearers: the emotionally damaged central character and the way he gradually learns to express tenderness- heartrending but never sentimental.

Tried to get ds to enjoy them, but suppose Warrior Scarlet was a bad choice, as ds himself has a disability which he hasn't come to terms with, so it probably seemed didactic to him in a way that I hadn't thought of. Wonder if he'd enjoy Frontier Wolf?

I'm glad various of you so love Rosemary Sutcliff's writing (she was my godmother). But please 'Notanidea' , just a gentle nudge that it is Sutcliff without an E. Mind you, you will find at the website www.rosemarysutcliff.wordpress.com that you are not alone in mis-spelling her.

And to 'Shallishanti', yest The Eagle of the Ninth is being made into a film, now called just The Eagle. More about this too at the website.

I'm a big Sutcliff fan too - I think I've collected most of them over the years. I love the Roman books but I also have a real soft spot for her earlier Tudor ones like The Queen Elizabeth Story and the Armourers House and Simon, which is about two friends who end up on opposite sides of the Civil War. All of those were set in North Devon where I live. I loved her autobiography, Blue Remembered Hills as well.

notanidea · 18/08/2010 18:36

agl - do accept my mistake.

BuntyPenfold · 31/08/2010 14:15

agl - she was your godmother!!!! Wow wow wow I need a very jealous indeed emoticon.
I love her books, especially the Roman period ones and the Armourer's House.
Did you know her well?
