Books for a just turned 6 year old

DS2 turned 6 last month and is an avid reader. Recently he has been reading things like Horrid Henry, Mr Gum, Tudr Budr, Roald Dahl etc.

The problem I have is that he isn't an enormously streetwise 6 year old, and although his reading is good for his age I don't want him reading things which are too "grown up" for him IYSWIM.

He still enjoys picture books as he loves the illustrations, but likes a chapter book to take to bed with him at night.

Has anyone got any recommendations for books which match both his reading ability and his age?

Enid blyton? A friend's six year old enjoys Secret Even and the Five Find-Outers series.

My DD(5) enjoyed The Worst Witch although some of yhe vocabulary is challenging. Also Dear Teddy Robinson and My Naughty Little Sister.

There are Star Wars 'readers' available too if you think he would be into that.

Thanks smallorange

He has a couple of Star Wars readers that I bought from a school book catalogue, but they weren't enormously challenging. I wonder if there are levels and the ones we had were at the lower end?

I did look at The Worst Witch in a bookshop at the weekend but DS2 told me that it was for girls!

Enid Blyton might be an idea, he has read The Magic Faraway Tree and enjoyed that. I loved Famous Five/Secret Seven etc as a child so should really have thought of them.

Jeremy Strong? Lots of silly humour in his books which should appeal to boys his age. If he likes animals, then some of the Dick King-Smith ones are good - The Hodgeheg, The Invisible Dog, etc. His Sophie books are good for that age too, but as the lead character is a girl he may not be so keen - she is a bit of a tomboy though.

Also some American ones my DS enjoyed at that age were the Magic Tree House series by Mary Pope Osbourne - a little formulaic, but action-packed and lots of interesting background information. Or the Marvin Redpost books by Louis Sacher.

thanks exexpat I've had a look at Jeremy Strong on Amazon and the do look like they would appeal to both my son's strange sense of humour.

Have ordered Winnie the Witch to see if he likes them, if he doesn't then I've also got a 4yr old DD who will in time I'm sure.

We just got a great box set from The Book People - astrosaurs - dinosaurs in space - and they're a great hit with my DS who has similar tastes in books.

I just remembered another one - the Ms Wiz series by Terence Blacker - DS loved them at that age. There's a box set here.

My DS2(6), if I get the code right!, anyway boy aged six also enjoys Famous 5, but a surprising recommendation I'd make is the 'Ben 10' series- they have converted the cartoon into chapter books, but with cartoon pics in the middle, and the quality of writing is suprisingly good. I got mine cheap at WHSmiths.

They're quite easy reading, but he might like the 'Selsig' books if he hasn't had them from school.
