What age for Lizzie Dripping?

DD just read Ordinary Jack (from the Bagthorpes series) and is asking for more. Annoyingly the library only have the last three in the series (out of a series of 10 . . . what is the point in that ???).

They do, however, have Lizzie Dripping - was trying to remember if that would appeal to an 8 year old who likes funny books, or if it would be a poor substitute for the Bagthorpes.

DD read and loved Lizzy Dripping at 8.
Have to recommend Andy Stantons' Mr Gum books they are hilarious and it doesn't matter if you read them in the wrong order

Ah, now interestingly dd wasn't overly taken with Mr Gum - for some reason it didn't appeal to her sense of humour (in fact she said the stories were ok but she didn't think they were funny . . .)

Will get LD out the library!

Hi

DD is just 7 and really enjoyed Lizzie Dripping. She also liked Roddy Doyle's Giggler series

I think the Bagthorpes are much funnier than Lizzie Dripping. Unfortunately the first ones in the series are much better than the last ones so you might want to try and get them through interlibrary loan or something.

Anne Fine writes some very funny books: Killer Cat (a bit young maybe), Crummy Mummy and Me and The Summer House Loon are her best IMO.

Sadly I've tried the county catalogue, and the last three is all it is, so I reckon it'll have to be Abebooks. Good to know that the early ones are better. I have found Absolute Zero on CD through the library though, so have ordered that one.

Luckily she's got a couple of books come in that I can get next time its open - need something new since if she doesn't stop reading her joke book to me shortly I may crack . . .

Will also try Anne Fine - many thanks.

Oh - and there's a hilarious book called The Best Christmas Pageant Ever by Barbara Robinson - it's American, and a classic there, but also available in the UK. She wrote some sequels too.

The Fudge books by Judy Blume are funny.

The Ogre Downstairs by Diana Wynne Jones - funny, dysfunctional family.

I like your daughter's taste. I always loved the Bagthorpes myself
