What do you read to your dd?

Hi
Just realised that since my yr2 dd is reading very well and developing a love of books, I have left her to read to herself. She is looking forward to starting an unabridged version of ?Little Women? on her own. I would love some suggestions of books that I could read to her and we could chat about. Does anyone have any ideas

My daughter has been free reading for about 2 yrs (she's 8) and I find that I just read a chapter of the book she's reading. She's able to have 3 or 4 books on the go at once, but I think it's better if she reads one, then starts the next.
Have you seen the Katie Morag stories? They're lovely and the illustrations are fab, as well as promoting lots of discussions here

I just read something that I think both dd & I will enjoy (my dd is now in yr 3, just 8).

Generally I avoid things that are too 'wordy' as I think they're easier to read to yourself (I think Little Women' would probably fall into that category), and also things that are terribly tense (as I read to her at bedtime).

Some things we've enjoyed over the last year or so have been 'Martin Pippin in the Daisy Field' (Eleanor Farjeon), 'Henrietta's House' by Elizabeth Gouge, 'Dogsbody' by Diana Wynne Jones, a retelling of the Robin Hood stories, some Welsh folk tales & various of the full length Wombles books (which are great as they are funny but not so funny that I can't read for giggling).

The Little House books (Little House in the Big Woods etc) are interesting ones to read & talk about if she hasn't read them already - I like the fact that Laura is so excited when she is given her first ever doll age 5 or so

How about the Narnia books? My dad read me a chapter every night and I read them on my own in between. I was probably about 7 or so (precocious reader me). Little House on the Prairie are great as someone has said and if you think she's up to it The Hobbit is brilliant as a bedtime story, chapter at a time.

The Worst Witch series are fab too.
