Hi everyone

My stepdaughter is 8 years old and she just moved in with our family, she doesn't speak English very well and I would like her to start reading books in English. Any suggestions??

The Topsy and Tim books are good + Charlei and Lola ones.

I would suggest yoyu start by reading to her and progress to her reading by herself. (but I have no experienxce sorry - hopefully someone will come along who can help more)

Go with her personal interests and personality - at 8 years old it's no point giving her pony books if she's into space rockets (or vice versa).

Take her to a a large library and see what she fancies - with a bit of trial and error she'll find her level.

audio books might be better if her english is poor, and a good way of finding out the kinds of stories she enjoys. I'd recommend Enid blyton - Famous Five etc and Gwyneth Rees Fairy Books, but there's lots available. they will help her language a lot, even though she's not reading them off the page.

This is quite 'close to home' for me - as I moved to the UK when I was 8.

I spoke no English, but lived with a family with lots of English books.

My (rather eccentric) route to English reading proficiency was:

Mr Men >> Snoopy >> Garfield >> Dahl >> Blyton >> Chalet School Stories >> ... happy confident reading

our library has dual language childrens books for some languages - have seen Polish, Gujerati, and others.

Can she read in her first language, or is she still getting to grips with reading at all?

she can read very well in her first language, she can even read English. But she's having probelems with correctly pronouncing the words and understanding them
