Another Antonia Forest thread

We haven't had one in a while.

I have just won "Attic Term" on ebay and almost got "Marlows and the Traitor" from a dealer but it turned out their website was out of date and it had sold in December. Boo hiss.

I tried to find the thread from a while back about "Nicola Merrick" the radio producer but I think it must have been in Chat because it has gone. I am re-reading all the AF books I have, in order, and it is surprising how things slip into place now. Can't believe I got "Ready-made family" for 25p in a charity shop 10 years ago and that launched me on such a fantastic discovery.

Now I have to convince my local library to get out the copy of "Run away Home" that they claim to have in the HQ store, and I will be very happy..

Obviously she will marry Patrick. Grin
And she is now a producer on radio 4.

Rosie - you weren't the seller were you?!?
Yes I thought it was a remarkably low price.
And now I have the whole set, and I am very chuffed.

I have just found this fanfic site.

Ooh I am enjoying those. And Lawrie married Selby......!

OP posts:
HumphreyCobbler · 07/10/2010 19:49

Selby - was this Peter's friend?

Noooo. Nicola married Robbie and worked for the secret service, NEVER letting on to anyone that she was, in fact, a very cool spy.

I was wondering which was my favourite. But I can't decide. Perhaps Peter's Room, but I don't have a copy of this so haven't read it in a while.

My favourite part is the Christmas play sequence in End of Term.

Am off to read the link now.

HumphreyCobbler · 07/10/2010 19:55

Val Longstreet - conservative minister

Grin
RosieMBanks · 07/10/2010 20:09

Ah no I wasn't the seller - rather wish I was though - she has some nice books!

tvaerialmagpiebin · 08/10/2010 11:37

One of those fanfics has Lawrie working at GCHQ - ?? and other has her on the Archers.

Gosh, they are good.

Rosie - yes, she has a list to die for there. I have tried hard not to get into the chalet school books, and so far I am resisting, but although the spirit is willing, the flesh is weak......

Can this come back? I'm drooling!

MirandaWest · 20/01/2011 14:46

I do like this thread :)

JoanofArgos · 20/01/2011 14:59

Yes, I have never actually met anyone but my mum who is Marlow-obsessed!

Muchos grattas :D

tyzer2001 · 22/01/2011 12:01

Hmm I have a copy of Autumn Term. Was going to put it on eBay but that seems to be the one that doesn't sell. Just my luck Grin

Lucifera · 26/01/2011 14:05

I made a NY resolution to obtain all AF books that I don't already have - but reckon that would cost me about £250. Would be worth it but ...

JoanofArgos · 26/01/2011 14:11

We could just precis them for you Wink ?

Lucifera · 27/01/2011 08:35

very kind offer! I have read all of them except the two historical ones but I want to own them (so I can re-read every couple of years!)

thaliablogs · 29/01/2011 23:44

I have them all now, plus 'antonia forest and the marlows' which has a lovely intro about how the author struck up a relationship with AF via letter writing. I remember being devastaed when AF died, I always hoped we'd get the happily ever after book (yes I know, vanishingly unlikely given her realism) of Nicola plus patrick in new zealand on a farm, with horses and falcons and a boat at the beach...

Miranda I think was my favourite character, great to have a jewish character in this kind of book (I am jewish).

I bought autumn term and end of term when my godmother took me to a bookshop when I was 9 and said I could have 9 books because I was 9. In that visit I also bought cart and cwidder, and power of three. And so my favourite 2 authors of all time were discovered on the same shopping trip.

Lovely to find this thread, thank you!

BuntyPenfold · 14/02/2011 10:52

I have never read RAH, still looking. Love the books and know all the others by heart.
Is there a synopsis of the plot anywhere, so I find out what happens?

I named my daughter Rowan!

I have a scruffy paperback of Autumn Term going begging if anyone is desperate :)

AnnMarlow · 14/02/2011 10:59

Hello :)

Am going through a lot of Marlow names at the moment Grin.

I have the Thursday Kidnapping and can't decide whether to sell it as I have no urge to read it again. Feels wrong to consider selling it though...

I like Miranda (might go back to that name). I love it when she gets the part of Ariel - she is just right for it :)

AnnMarlow · 14/02/2011 11:00

Bunty there is an antonia forest website with great précis. Will find it and link to it.

AnnMarlow · 14/02/2011 11:02

Here's the summary for RAH

MissCromwell · 14/02/2011 11:05

I now have a complete collection Smile

RAH is not one of the best though. Mind you, I've noticed people disagree about what the best is.

There's quite a few of us, aren't there? I've noticed a Val Longstreet wandering around too.

AnnMarlow · 14/02/2011 11:09

I am also Val BlushGrin

JoanofArgos · 14/02/2011 11:12

Oh, how funny - I read MATT yesterday having never really read it 'properly' before.... it's bloody odd, though.

I really like RAH! But think my favourite is Cricket Term.

AnnMarlow · 14/02/2011 11:25

I might also be LoisSanger
And NicolaMarlow
And LawrieMarlow
And ThaliaKeith

And may have stored a few others up for any times of great need Grin.

I can't decide which my favourite is.

I do love all the "school ones". And Ready Made Family and Run Away Home. Can never decide quite what I think about Peter's Room as I find myself skipping through the Gondal bits. Marlows and the Traitor pretty good. Falconer's Lure also v good. Couldn't manage the Thuggery Affair and did sell that one Blush. Never got the historical ones when they came out (should have done but just didn't).

Am getting bored of being Ann. May name change again (btw am not MissCromwell Grin)

JoanofArgos · 14/02/2011 11:28

Oh, be someone less cannonical, like Barby Wateridge! Or the Youth from Changear!

BuntyPenfold · 14/02/2011 12:51

AnnMarlow thank you for the link.

Does Nicola marry Patrick?
