dd(7) at tricky 'in-between' stage ....

dd (y2) has been a fluent and extremely keen reader for a while now - she devours books at a tremendous rate and I'm starting to scratch my head at what to suggest next

She's read most of the usual suspects which get mentioned on here and is no longer interested in fairy/princess/magic kitten-puppy-pony/unicorn/mermaid/animal ark/rescue-type formulaic books (phew!)

I was browsing the shelves of the children's library today and there seems to be a huge gap between the books she's grown out of and the books for older children - not in level of difficulty, but more in terms of theme etc

any ideas?

Hi basildonbond,

My DS1 went through a similar stage. All my kids are pretty avid readers so I am constantly looking for ways to feed their appetite. My 3 elder children are all reading Bayard books at the moment, which come in 3 diferent titles for different age ranges: StoryBox for 3-6 year olds, AdventureBox for 6-9 year olds and DiscoverBox for 9-12 year olds. They read a lot of other books too but they all, especially DS1, love these. They come out every month so there is much less chance of the kids getting bored!

Here's a link to one of the books online:

I would recommend the authors I loved at that age, namely:

Joan Aiken - Wolves of Willoughby chase etc

Helen Cresswell - Lizzie Dripping, The Signposters

Nina Bawden she wrote Carries War but that particular one may be a bit old for your DD at the moment

Philippa Pearce - Toms Midnight Garden, Dog so SMall.

Also the Paddington stories - which I still love reading.
