Hi All,

I'm preganant with my 2nd and am carefully broaching the subject with my 3yr old DS. Can anyone recommmend any great books? We don't know if it's a boy or girl yet.
Thanks

Congratulations on your pregnancy.

I read Usborne First Experiences The New Baby to dd1 when expecting dd2.

It really helped her to understand. She was just 2 at the time.

I liked the fact that it talked about the mom going to hospital and showed breastfeeding as they were relevant to our situation.

I'm sure you will get lots of recommendations.

Best of luck.

I second the Usbourne 'The New Baby' - my children still like the story now. When DD was born DS couldn't understand why we didn't call her Susie!! (The baby in the story)

yes the Usborne one is good.

'There's a house inside my mummy' by Giles Andreae.
also Topsy & Time 'The New Baby'.

We had There's a House inside my Mummy

And this book, with its follow up here. These two are lovely, no words just illustrations for you to talk about. The older child is unisex, as is the baby. Positive images of breastfeeding too.

A favourite of ours was Something Special by Nicola Moon, not so much educational but a beautiful, colourful multi-cultural story about Charlie and his new baby sister.

Thanks all for these great suggestions x

I've really liked the New Baby series by Rachel Fuller. (will try to get back on later and link, am on my phone at the mo). They have very few words so we've talked through them ourselves. They also feature breastfeeding, which is important to me. We have three out of the four - one called Waiting for Baby about before baby arrives, and a couple about after baby is here (we've talked about how DS can be a big boy and help with grown-up things, how he and baby can play together etc). The toddlers in them look pretty gender-neutral so you could read them to a boy or girl. My DS is only 19 months though, but then an older toddler could engage in discussion about them more?

'Waiting for Baby' was and still is a HUGE hit in our house - DD still asks for it at bedtime even though our 'new baby' is now 2.5! The Usborne one is popular too. I personally find 'There's a House Inside My Mummy' a bit cringey, but there's nothing really wrong with it, just my problem!

Congratulations on being pregnant. I only have 1 child, but I have seen the Usborne book and it is great

pigleychez · 16/04/2010 12:36

I am 35 weeks pregnant with a DD of 20mths.

We have
this and this.

DD prefers the first one though. I like the bit about Nanny coming to stay which is whats planned for us when labour comes.

The topsy and tim book is about thier friends new baby not thiers so not overly relelvant i found.

www.amazon.co.uk/Ever-So-Kes-Gray/dp/0340873337/ref=sr_1_7?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1273694946&sr= 1-7

I really like this book - it expains a bit about how your dh might feel when a new baby arrives..you know the babys smiles and Dad thinks it is really celver etc, culminating with the baby doing a poo in the bath and everyone laughs and the child feeling left out does a poo in the bath and gets sent to bed...but it does have a happy outcome

we had "there's a house inside my mummy" which ds1 still loves, we read it a lot even though i am not pregnant

also my new baby which is nice because it has no words, just lots of busy pictures which you can talk about and make up your own story. it also shows the baby being breastfed, which I liked
