What NON-fiction books does your 6yr old enjoy?

Ds, soon to be 6, is a keen reader, likes Mr Gum and the Famous Five for example - but so far we've only bought him fiction. He's dipped into the Horrible Histories but really they are a bit over his head.

He has devoured a StarWars manual & a Dr Seuss type book about the human body but what else can we steer him towards? Was thinking something sciencey or maybe on a history topic?

This one is good www.amazon.co.uk/Space-Encyclopedia-First-Reference-Dk/dp/140532192X/ref=pd_rhf_shvl_21 as is the others in the series

Also the Usborne flap books are good like this one: www.amazon.co.uk/Inside-Your-Body-Usborne-Books/dp/0746070055/ref=pd_bxgy_b_img_c

dd (also 6) likes 'fact' books

Like '1000 Dinosaur facts' or somesuch

We will tend to get something from the library which goes along with her current Topic at school

Thanks, Cazzybabs.

All I could think of was Usborne ones but even then don't know which ones are any good, totally forgot about DK books.

My 5 (nearly 6) year old just tends to go to the library and pick stuff himself.

For example when we got a hamster he borrowed a book about looking after hamsters. Or when they were doing about Diwali in school he borrowed one about that (which I think was an Usbourne one). He reads a lot of facts about dinosaurs, or trucks, or space etc books.

By going to the library he can pick what he wants to read that week (both fiction and non fiction).

But we also have a set of kids' encyclopedias, which he devours.

DD (almost 6) has loved looking through this.

Like your name too

She's got stuff on dinosaurs, religions of the world, the Victorians, the senses

Try 'The Magic Treehouse' series. Two children discover a treehouse full of books and when they open each book it takes them back to a period in history. The first one is about dinosaurs but there are also books about the Titanic, pirates etc. As they combine fact and fiction, they are a really good way of making history more accessible for younger children.

Am off to Amazon, thank you, Madamehooch and others for the suggestions.

If anyone can think of any more, please keep them coming!
