His favourite books at the moment are Horrid Henry and Lizzie Zipmouth. His school are buying each child books personally tomorrow and they have asked us for ideas. I don't want to choose anything too baby ish for him and it would be great to get some ideas here.

His reading age I have no idea about they say at school that he seems to be doing quite well however I can't get him anything too scary or involved because he is a bit analytical and not mature enough for some stuff.

When we go to the library he gets audio books or very much younger/picture books for his siter.

Thank you.

Mud by Alan Mcdonald and Cahrlie and the big birthday bash by Hilary Mckay are th eonly ones I can find linked to HH in Amazon, I wonder if anyone knows if they're any good?

Are they for you to read to him or for him to read himself? Might he like Astrosaurs - maybe a little too hard (but maybe not), but I bet he'd like the stories if read to him? (Dinosaurs in space, how cool is that . . .)

Poledra · 01/03/2010 10:15

How about Roald Dahl? 6-yo DD1 is into these at the moment, and started with Fantastic Mr Fox last year and loved it. Charlie and The Chocolate Factory was also a big hit. We had to read The Witches with her as she found it too scary to read lone though. She also liked the Magic Faraway Tree a lot.

Megglevache · 01/03/2010 10:16

For him to read Takver- thank you very much for asking

Whoah, dinos and spaces/planets are very much favoured things for him at the moment. Will go and check them out.

Astrosaurs look fab- do they have any illustrations?

Hi Poledra, do you know what I thought RD would be right up his street but he's been very luke warm about any of them! ( I loved BFG and Matilda etc as a child)

Because he is emotionally still quite young he can't cope with anything too scary and he still loves lovely pictures
Magic Faraway Tree you say (off ot hunt)

Someone (can't remember who) keeps giving my dc the age-appropriate one from this range of books. They have always proved very popular, and even as they grew older the dc still liked reading the younger ones.

Thank yo!!u (at last an online book you can snoop in on!)

That's more than enough to get a list together.

Great help, cheers.

This has some lovely pictures - DD1 got it Christmas 2008, and still likes it. Hubert Horatio is one that both my older DDs (4 and 6) go back to a lot, and the pictures are the classic Lauren Child style -does he like Charlie and Lola?

Heathcliffscathy · 01/03/2010 10:28

magical stories for 5 year olds...we both loved it and that is a rare thing!

Megglevache · 01/03/2010 10:32

Gosh and Hubert Horatio looks brill too! (he used to love C&L!

Sophable thank you- yes I am curious you loved them too? Even after reading them over and over and over? Hope your pregnancy is going well for you.

The Astrosaurs Academy books by Steve Cole are slightly younger than Astrosaurs and are great. Also the Superpowers series by Alex Cliff is great for a first reader/reading aloud. It's about two eight year old boys, friendship and superpowers.

Megglevache · 01/03/2010 19:44

Thank you Dotty, I'm going to Waterstones tomorrow to stock up myself as I'm dying to buy some myself now

I got in real trouble for introducing DT to Dahl in reception, teacher saying humour and comprehension was way above child... anyway, then discovered Magic Tree House series and he ploughed through 15 of them, literally gobbling them up so I can't recommend them enough. All by Mary Pope Osbourne.

Megglevache · 02/03/2010 19:21

Hi Clare, yes I can see that being the case for my ds.

Thanks for that suggestion I will put them on the list for future purchases.
