Trying to find some titles for my neice's 8th Birthday. She's an able reader and has enjoyed books about cats, all the Roald Dahl's and Famous Five. Doesn't want anything "babyish" though I don't want anything with teenage issues IYKWIM.

We love Cressida Cowell's range of How to Train Your Dragon and How to Speak Dragonese featuring Hiccup the Viking.

Any Michael Morpurgo books - The Butterfly Lion, Kaspar, Running Wild.

Pippi Longstocking
Blyton school series: St Clare's, Malory Towers, Naughtiest Girl
Miss Happiness and Miss Flower, Rumer Godden

Mrs Pepperpot stories

My dd (8 in a month) has recently got very into non-fiction books - the Horrible Science and Murderous maths books in particular, plus lots of random books about dinosaurs/astronauts from the library.

Don't know if that sort of thing might hit the spot - you can get more 'grown-up' without having to worry about content, IYSWIM!

Also, I seem to keep recommending this one - but thinking cats and Famous Five - the Lionboy series was a big hit with dd, adventure story about a boy who can speak to cats (and lions) set in the future but quite realistic, not straight fantasy.

The Jill Tomlonson books, such as The Owl Who Was Afarid of the Dark?

They are not technically difficult books to read, but the stories are lovely andnot babyish.

A few of DD's friends like the Spy Dog series and Cam Jenson (mystery books).

What about things like Charlotte's Web.

Does she like Enid Blyton?

Guinness Book of Records was a smash hit at Christmas

This set of Sally Gardner books from the Red House discount book website. We have most of them - DS loved the ones he read, and DD (7) is starting to read and enjoy them.

I always recommend Tumtum and Nutmeg about two little mice and their adventures.

They are exciting stories and nicely illustrated, so great for gifts. They are an easy read chapter book, but my 9 year old dd loves them.

I loved what Katy Did/...At School/ ... Next at that age.

How about:
Molly Moon
The Monster Babysitter series (Kes Gray)
Roman Mysteries
Cornelia Funke (Igraine the Brave, Dragon rider)
Gwyneth Rees - series about a witch cat
Debbie Gliori - does one about a girl with a witch baby sister
Worst Witch

Or if she's enjoyed the famous five books, she might like this - the Famous Five Survival Guide. It's kind of like the Dangerous Book for Boys (how to tie knots, do outdoorsy stuff etc) mixed with a Famous Five mystery.

Themasterandmargaritas · 12/02/2010 16:22

Oh yes Florence dd (8) loved the Roman Mysteries. They were a big hit.

CantSupinate · 12/02/2010 16:33

Beast Quest series, I got DD Little Women from library too, but I think she's daunted by the size of it.

daisymaybe · 13/02/2010 21:02

The Witch Baby and Me (something like that...) Also, Horrible Histories are big in our house atm.

CDMforever · 14/02/2010 21:32

Thanx all. Have ordered a load of some of your suggestions from amazon. I'm sure she'll enjoy opening each one separately and, hopefully, reading them!
