Ny dd is a good reader now, after years of not reading anything at all, it all took off in the summer with a love affair with Jacqueline Wilson. But I want her to read some more 'quality' books. We read Heidi together and she enjoyed it. We have just finished Alice in Wonderland. Please cana nyone recommend some good classics because my parents did not quide my reading and I just devoured Famous Fives and Secret Sevens but I know there are better books out there.

has she read the books about Gregory.. what are the called.. diary of a wimpy kid series. they are funny and my daughter is 7 and can read them herself pretty much - they have some pictures too which help her.

jacqueline wilson and judi curtain too 'old' (the issues) imo for a 7 year old!

Princess Mirabelle is another favourite of my dd's. She is a naughty mirror reflection of mirabelle and she turns up and causes trouble

horrid henry classic too! love those

Yes, you're right a bout Jacqueline Wilson, although we loved Double Act, Cliffhanger, Best Friends and Buried Alive. They are worth reading I think. Others on top shelf for later.

Jaqueline Wilson did write some books for younger readers, like Sleepovers

wouldn't let dd read the others though, she would worry about the issues in them (she is also 7)

another big fan of Wimpy Kid here and also Michael Morpurgo, especially Mudpuddle Farm

she loves lots of other trashy books too - but these are the ones we like too!

nwmum · 03/12/2009 22:34

i will have to check out rumer godden and those j wilson books for younger children.

buried alive sounds a bit ... of a scary book title for a younger child!

babartheelephant · 04/12/2009 20:18

Thanks everyone. I'll enjoy looking through these in the bookshop with her.
Buried Alive is a funny story about a friendship between 2 boys, but you have to read it after Cliffhanger.

If she liked Heidi, maybe she'd like the Laura Ingalls Wilder books: Little House in the Big Woods, Little House on the Prairie etc? My cousin's 6 and 7 y-o girls love them.

My Naughty Little Sister by Dorothy Edwards - Book People selling all 5 in a pack at a very good price. Lots of stories in each book so good for a child to read to first and then for her to read herself later.

Beverly Cleary's Ramona Quimby books are about a child from 5/6 upwards in the US.

I enjoyed both series at your daughter's age.

Rumer Godden is another good suggestion you've already had.

Do you go to the library?

The Anna Hibiscus books are loved by everyone I know who has read them. Children, parents and even grandparents. Although they are aimed at the confident reader of 7 and above. There are three Anna Hibiscus books out now so you can really get stuck in to Anna Hibiscus and her life and family in amazing Africa.
