James and the Giant Peach and the BFG are my favourites.

Witches a bit scary for littlies.

RainRainGoAway · 03/12/2009 18:51

We just read 'The Twits' to dd age 5. She found it hilarious but its probably a little bit grim really for her age.

Very funny though for parents! The description of Mr Twits beard and its contents. Bleugh!!

Oh just remembered George's Marvellous Medicine - that's a nice one for young 'uns!

The enormous crocodile is aimed at slightly younger kids with fab pictures

nwmum · 03/12/2009 19:31

For 5yr old, Fantastic Mr Fox, Magic Finger, enormous Crocodile, Griaffe, Pelly and Me,esio Trot

For 7yrold, Twits, James and the Giant Peach,Matilda, witches,Charlie and Chocolate Factory, Vicar of ?

There is a set for £15.99 on redhouse books - great value and eventually they will read them all

HappyMummyOfOne · 04/12/2009 17:08

I've ordered these from the Book People - £15.99 for 15 books - DS is a little too young for them but we can read together until he is ready for them alone.

JustAnotherManicMummy · 04/12/2009 17:12

Just to add:

For 5 year old - Revolting Rhymes and Dirty Beasts. I particularly loved Dirty Beasts when I was little.

I still remember reading George's Marvellous Medicine when I was 7. I thought it was the most exciting thing I had ever read.

aristocat · 04/12/2009 18:14

thanks ladies - looked at book people and will just get the full 15 as its such good value.

cheers

Thank You!!!

The Twits! It is gross but very well written and they will LOVE it.
James and the Giant Peach, Matilda, the Witches, the BFG and others are actually quite long and more suited to older kids.
Esio Trot is short enough for younger children but strangely I didn't enjoy the story very much and I don't think dd1 did either. Not read it again which is unheard of for Dahl.
The Giraffe the Pelly and Me is a good one too.
We have a box set of about 8 books as well as a number collected over the years. worth their weight in gold, I can't wait to read them to dd2.

mrsruffallo · 11/12/2009 20:11

DD read The Magic Finger when she was 5. It's a good starter one, quite short yet very funny too.

You can get a CD of Simon Callow reading "the Twits".

DD has played it endlessly, it is such a good book and Simon Callow reads it brilliantly.

Matilda is being dramatised on Radio 4 in two parts - part 1 tomorrow Sunday 20 Dec 09 @ 3pm part 2 on 27 Dec 09 @ 3pm. Each 60 minutes long. Link to Matilda on Radio4, Mumsnet Radio Addicts

Thought that may be of interest to anyone looking for Matilda as an audio-book (even if this version isn't quite an audio-book).

aristocat · 28/12/2009 09:57

The Bookpeople did offer an audio collection of Roald Dahl works, CDs in a tin. I've bought it but not played it yet so I don't know what it's like. It seemed like good value, don't know if it's still avaialble.

I caught the second episode of Matilda after getting baby to bed (bizarre broadcasting at 9 pm but great time for me). My dad actually listened to it deliberately.

BlauerEngel · 04/01/2010 15:27

We've got the CD in a tin of the Roald Dahl works (from Book People) and it's truly fantastic. The narrators are brilliant. Great for long car journeys, as many of the stories go over several CDs.

I liked Danny the Champion of the World when I was 6. The Twits is hilarious but revolting.
