We have masses but would like to give dd a couple of new ones for Xmas.

Wondering if we've missed any.

I have two boys so I'm not sure this will be much us. but
they loved Oliver Jeffers' books (and still do actually) especially The Way Back Home and Lost and Found. They also liked Room on the Broom and Marvin Wanted More (about a sheep who wants to be bigger so he eats and eats until he eats the whole world!)

Sharing a Shell is lovely too. It's got lots of glittery pictures through it.

Mog and Winnie the Witch are also popular in our house.

If she likes Angelina, this is lovely

Princess and the Wizard

nice interactive Peter Rabbit update I find the other B Potters a bit hard-going

Pirate Girl - good feminist message

current fave There's a Class 2 one too.

dd is 5 and loves this and the oliver moon books...not "girly" at all and henrietta in partic gets better with each read

aristocat · 03/12/2009 18:38

my DD is 5 and she loves the Lettice books by Mandy Stanley

exexpat · 03/12/2009 18:44

That's the age when they can just about sit still and listen to longer stories with not many pictures. The Sophie books by Dick King-Smith went down very well with DD at that age - it's a series of six (you can get them in two bumper books) which start when she is four turning five, and end when she's about seven. Very good if your DD is at all keen on animals. Also for reading aloud the Clever Polly and the Stupid Wolf books.

My mum just gave our cousin's kids 2 of the Naughty Little Sister books which the BookPeople are selling a pack of 5 of quite cheaply. Apparently cousin's ds aged 7 and dd2 aged about 4 both really like them a lot. They are longer books but divided up into stories with some illustrations so would work well for bedtime reading and she can read them for herself in future.

Beverly Cleary's Ramona Quimby books are another suggestion, maybe slightly older.

Picture books - I think the Blue Kangaroo books are lovely.

nancy75 · 04/12/2009 23:52

4 year old's newest favourite book is 'The Wolves in the Walls' by Neil Gaimen. It scares her, she loves it

dolphindotty · 01/03/2010 19:20

My dd age 6 loves Magic Ballerina by Darcey Bussell. They're fun and not just for girls who like ballet, more fairy stories than ballet books. The chapters are a good length for reading aloud.

I see this thread is really old, but: this book is beautiful and I loved it when I was small. Would be a good gift too. I have already bought a copy even though DS is only 2 and DD not born yet!

A Time to Keep

It's not really a story, just has lovely images to pore over.

Dillie · 01/03/2010 19:34

My DD favourite is The Gruffalo ... must know the story inside out!!!

Once there was a mouse, in a deep dark wood .....

Finnchic · 11/03/2010 08:58

My little boy loved the complete collection of Thomas the Tank Engine stories. There were the perfect length for bedtime stories and there were many of them. We read all them and then read them all again!

GreatOrmondSt · 11/03/2010 15:11

My DC are very much into The Gruffalo stories as well but I'm also trying to get them to read them some of the old classics such as Alice in Wonderland and Peter Pan

Chamomile · 11/03/2010 15:36

DD got the Adventures of Pippi Longstocking for Christmas (The Lauren Child edition) and loves it. We are on the 3rd rereading.

hana · 11/03/2010 15:57

My Naughty Little Sister
Amelia Jane
