Ok so we've had a moan about the bad ones. Lets think of the best books. Some of which seem a bit crap to me but if my DS loves it (22 months) then it gets a vote from me.

Current favourites are, The Gruffalo, Russell the Sheep, Splat the Cat, Mouse moves House or any of the Usbourne phonics books. He also loved (when we had them from the library) Bear Hunt, The Tiger who came to Tea, Wibbley Pig. God he loves sooo many I can't actually remember them at the moment.

Brown Bear, Brown Bear
Not Now Bernard
Where the Wild Things Are
Angry Arthur

Anything by Mick Inkpen

Can't bear Mr Men books or phonics books.

DS1 is now 2.5 - we read to him very early and then he lost interest from 14 months when he learned to walk, but got more interested again around the time ds2 was born when he was 21 months. He now adores having a story read to him, and his favourites include

Martin Waddell's series about Little Bear and his dad Big Bear
Julia Donaldson - especially Stickman, The Smartest Giant in Town, Monkey Puzzle, Room on the Broom, and sometimes The Gruffalo, The Gruffalo's Child - his preferences have varied a bit but he likes Stickman best now - I like Room on the Broom, the Gruffalos and Monkey Puzzle better than the others
The Harry and the Dinosaurs books - there are 11 stories so far and they're good for repeated rereading for adults I think.
Not Now Bernard, David McKee
The Tiger Who Came to Tea, Judith Kerr
Library Lion
Jill Murphy - Whatever Next, The Last Noo-Noo
Jan Fearnley, A Very Proper Fox
Emma Chichester Clark's Blue Kangaroo books
Maurice Sendak, Where the Wild Things Are
Harry Horse, A Friend for Little Bear

I've bought him a lot of books and he enjoys most stories really, but these are the ones I can think of that he's chosen to have read to him repeatedly.
