I have finished using this book to teach my DS1 to read, but am not too impressed with the books they recommend to use as reading material/practice afterwards.

Has anyone else used this book and got some suggestions on good first books for him to read? He's nearly 5.

Are you in the UK? There will be a wide range of suitable books at school - talk to the teacher for suggestions. The most common early readers are the Kipper and Biff series, which some parents loathe but I've always enjoyed.

I'm not in the uk, but hope to return in the next couple of years. School doesn't start until six here and DS1 was fed up with not reading so I thought it best to help, not hinder.

There is a series called I Can Read. It starts at a pre school level and goes through graded levels. Level 1 is about right for after the 100 Lessons book. Also thingws like the Mister Men and Thomas the Tank Engine paperbacks are quite good (at least my 6 year old likes them!) You could also try Horrid Henry, Charlie and Lola or something similar. They are at about the right level. There's also a series of reading book type things called Kids and Co that are really good.

Non fiction ones that might do are the Read and Wonder series, the My Best Book of....series or maybe Kingfisher Young Knowledge.

Congratulations on getting all the way through it. DS4 absolutely hated it and we gave up half way through

What sort of level is his reading at? My DD (age 6) is now reading mr men books, also see the egmont bananas books - they come in different levels. The next step is something like Horrid henry but we are not quite there yet - also we look out for bargain packs from the book people (we just bought the Ruth Miskin superphonics books and red house - I got a pack of first readers from red house recently:

I'd recommend a set of 16 books called 'Red Nose Readers'. The Book People online have got the whole set for less than £10 I'm sure.

They are really funny and provided a welcome break from the very dry Oxford Reading Tree books that they were reading at school. My boys loved them at age 4/5 (and I liked them so much that I've kept them for DS3)

I used the "Teach your child..." book as well. We followed it up with the I Can Read series. Then it was Horrid Henry on his own.
