Stories about Cats

DD is a huge cat fan. We seem to be exhausting the library of their books about cats.

She is currently about to finish 'The cat who wanted to go home' by Jill Tomlinson. She has read a cat series by Linda Newbery so is now on the look out for more cat themed books.

She picked up 'Warrior Cats' recently but it was far over her head...I did try and tell her it was too old .

So, what can you recommend for a cat obsessed loving girl?

The Adolphus one is by Michael Morpurgo. Adolphus Tips
A really good book for 8-12 but too old for OP's DD I think.

Catkin by Antonia Barber is a lovely picture book about a cat who rescues a child stolen by fairies.

The Patchwork Cat by Nicola Bayley and William Mayne is another charming picture book about a cat in search of the patchwork quilt her owners have thrown away.

Fun with Mrs Thumb by Jan Mark is a delightful picture book about a cat playing with a dolls house and its occupant.

Cats and Dolls by Margriet Heymans is out of print but not too hard to find. It's a picture book about a little girl who is asked to tidy her aunt's house but finds it full of naughty cats and dolls when she gets there.

Gobbolino, the Witch's Cat by Ursula Moray Williams is very, very good but probably more one to read aloud.

So is The Easter Cat by Meindert de Jong, which is about a little girl who longs for a cat but whose mother is allergic. It ends happily.

And definitely Orlando.

Your DD sounds like a younger version of mine, OP!

Your dd might also like the various Church Mouse books by Graham Oakley, about a group of church mice & the poor put upon church cat, Sampson. DD loved them at that age, she didn't get most of the jokes (tbh they're more aimed at adults) but the stories are lovely as are the big and very detailed pictures.

When you run out of books, there is also Cats the musical dvd, it makes great home-cinema, just like being in the theatre.
Songs and costumes are fantastic and age doesn't really matter.

LadyGP- excellent link, great price, thank you...but, we bought those cat books a while ago and she loved them! Highly recommend them...and at that price too!

She is now reading through all the Jill Tomlinson books and really enjoying them. She has her eye on the Dinosaur Cove series as dinosaurs seem to be the next passion- the cat obsession will never leave though!

She is also eagerly awaiting the next 'Daisy and the trouble with...' book.

mousehole cat always makes me cry

does the kingdom of carbonel involve a pharmacist and the bottles of red and green liquid in the window? i have a strong memory of that story from childhood but couldn't remember the name.

Varajak Paw is a recomended by DD1 who read it about 18 months ago aged 9. Unfortunately she is unable to give a coherent idea of the type of story it is..... 'it's basically about cats um who kinda like have this way and this cat um he has the way and he has to fight this cat who has the way and then they restore it back to peace'
There you go clear as mud!

Maisie series- Maisie Bites the Big Apple, Maisie Goes to school etc by Aileen Paterson with a Scottish theme are for slightly younger children.

Another recommendation from DD Cosmo and the big Sneeze by Gwyneth Rees.

New cat book from Judith Kerr

LynetteScavo · 14/09/2009 11:17

Wouldn't Judith Kerr be like, 105 years old by now?

LadyGlencoraPalliser · 14/09/2009 11:20

She is in her mid-eighties, I think.

Millenium Falcon, yes, Mrs Cantrip gives John and Rosemary a prescription, and tells them to go and get it made up at Hedgem and Fudge the chemist. The description of 'two great glass bottles full of glowing red and green liquid' is just as you remember! OP, DD (4.5) also loves cats - the 'Mr Pusskins' books are great favourites, and she adores 'Six Dinner Sid', 'Mog', 'Twinkles, Arthur and Puss', and also all the Richard Scarry books which have lots of cats in them! Oh, and Beatrix Potter of course. Not quite sure if you would like these...(they are not to everyone's taste!) but I have picked up the odd Susan Herbert book (often in charity shops) - 'Cats History of Western Art', 'Pre-Raphaelite Cats','Impressionist Cats' etc....to look at the pictures.
