Gay/lesbian books for children

Can anyone recommend a good book for introducing the concept of same sex relationships to little children? I have a 2.5 year old who is a very advanced reader and I'm keen to redress the balance after reading a load of prince/princess books...

Seriously... why don't you just talk to your 2.5 year old about different types of relationships as and when the subject arises?

I like the Todd Parr books which are very PC and have lovely pictures - both ds's loved his books when they were little.

I wouldn't worry about trying to find same sex relationship books for your 2.5 year old. Just find books with lots of different types of character in that aren't princes/princesses!

Very young children are 'introduced' to the concept of male-female monogamy almost as soon as anyone starts reading to them. Why shouldn't they be introduced to the alternatives too?

Sorry I didnt mean it like that, Im not adverse to the idea, I just think its a little odd to want to actively search out these books. Why not let kids be kids, live in a simple little world, and deal with these variations when they get older? I never knew gay people existed until I was about 12 and started secondary school, and Im 100% tolerent to people.

It's good that you're 100 per cent tolerant monkey , but a lot of schoolchildren are deeply prejudiced about non-heterosexual people. Catch 'em with reasonable, non-prejudiced positions when they're young, IMO.

Very similar to the (very widespread) tendency to present a 'perfect' spread of ethnicity in young children's books, television programmes, etc. Nobody complains about that (do they?) or considers it 'odd'.

There are 2 sets of lesbian mums at DD's school. I had a hilarious conversation with DD, trying to explain how two ladies could still have biological children- after 10 minutes, she was like "nope, still don't get it".

She was quite happy just knowing they were 2 ladies who loved each other, my attempts at biology were quite unneccessary .

At 2.5 I think its hardly neccesary - just an open minded attitude in general has helped my dc develope in a rounded way- I have always told them if someone fots into your heart then thats whats right for you.

My boys didnt know about homosexuals and gays and lesbians in fact they thought a poof was a magic dragon from the song I sometimes sang to them but they did know several ladies who loved other ladies and a few men who loved other men-ive never made an issue of anything.

I know - it's bizarre. Hey, I certainly give these things more thought than most, but worrying about an advanced 2.5 year old reader having access to gay literature isn't one I thought would ever come across...
