Hi,

my ds has just turned 3 and still has difficulty with self control, sharing and waiting patiently. I have read him Mick the disobedient puppy from my childhood ladybird collection, and Pumpkin Soup by Helen Cooper which he is very interested in, ( a fab book for any young child ) but would really love to find him other titles, indeed dvds too...

I'll watch this thread with interest. My dd (3.5) is bright as a button but has the social skills of a maddened wasp.

thisisyesterday · 03/06/2009 22:03

they don't have social skills at that age!
well, my 4yr old still struggles with the things you mention anyway

heck, i struggle with them sometimes myself

seriously though, i don't think that any of those things should be a cause for concern at that age. not that that is any reason for you not to read books and work on it (but i don't have any suggestions sorry )

Usborne do a range of 'cautionary tales', stories with a moral to them such as:

Say 'please' Louise
Don't be greedy Graham
Give that back, Jack
Don't tell lies, Lucy

etc etc

I am an Usborne Rep, if you'd like to order through me you can.

Mine! by by Hiawyn Oram and Mary Rees. I particularly love the payoff line!

peasandbeans · 11/06/2009 11:23

"What I like" by Catherine and Laurence Anholt.

Not a cautionary tale, just a book with lots of pictures of things children like and don't like: going swimming, eating ice cream, not sharing their toys, people being rude etc.

Its a good book for talking about things with children (which is also good for their social skills), and getting them to think about how they like things to be.

also "good days, bad days" (same authors).

There are some lovely books by Shirley Hughes about a little girl which cover things like sharing etc, I think you can buy them as a set - the nursery collection perhaps?

There's one by Jeanne Willis called penguin goes to play school which is all about sharing and is great too

notyummy · 11/06/2009 11:48

If he is quite bright, then a lot of the Shirley Hughes books would be good - beautiful drawings of the situations small children find themselves in, but no a nasty smug patronsing tone about what they should do - IYSWIM?

The 'Alfie' books are a firm favourite with dd (2.10) - how Alfie interacts with his little sister and friends is beautifully observed. Also 'Dogger' - with the hero's big sister being kind and therefore Dogger being restored to his rightful owner. There are some also some books with slightly less narrative on 'Giving'/'Sharing' with some nice pictures to chat around.

I LOVE Shirley Hughes. Can't wait until DD is a little older and then we will start the 'My Naughty Little Sister Books'!

curlygal · 11/06/2009 12:45

I love Shirely Hughes too. especially Alfie.

DS is three too and loves them. I;ve already tried him on my nuaghty little sister and he is less keen sadly, maybe he will grow into them

peasandbeans · 11/06/2009 18:58

big fans of Alfie here, too!

Campaspe · 11/06/2009 19:02

I would agree with the previous posters about Shirley Hughes. Some other books that my DD (aged 2.6) enjoys are:
"Marvin Gets Mad" - all about a sheep who can't share and has a HUGE tantrum
"This is Our House" - Michael Rosen, all about a little boy at playgroup who just won't let anyone playmates into the playhouse
Any of the Little Princess books by Tony Ross (assuming your DS is too young to be sniffy about the fact it features a little girl!)
Check out the "How do dinosaurs play with their friends?" by Jane Yolen, a very short book, so may be a little too young for your DS?
"Elephant and the Bad Baby" - about a little boy who forgets to say please.

Have a look at the Bookstart website for more ideas. I blog about my DD's reading, and if you look at my profile, you can access my blog and see more about the books we have shared. Happy hunting!

curlygal · 11/06/2009 19:43

DS also loves how do dinosaurs so don;t think it's too young as the dinosaurs are all named and well drawn so there is that asepect too

bohemianbint · 11/06/2009 19:51

oooh, good thread. DS is also nearly 3 and very good idea to educate him socially under the guise of storytime, which he loves...

curlygal · 11/06/2009 20:05

also Harry and the Dinosaurs books often have Harry and his sister falling out and Harry being taken off to settle down.

peasandbeans · 11/06/2009 20:32

we also like Little Rabbit Foo Foo

peasandbeans · 11/06/2009 20:33

and all the Little Rabbit books by harry horse, which have nothing to do with Little Rabbit Foo Foo, but have wonderful illustrations.

Noonki · 11/06/2009 20:45

Pippo books have sweet simple messages about sharing.

Mr men - Mr noisy, good to stop shouting (and we do whinging of this aswell)
