Magazines for a 5 yr old - what next?

Not exactly a book question but a magazine one. My 5 yo DD is fairly good at reading etc and now whizzes through all the workbook stuff in the magazines like Friends and the cartoon ones. I looked at the next lot 'up' and they all seemed to be girly ones about boys and make up rather than writing /drawing for older children.

Is there a decent magazine which caters for those children who like writing and drawing but are above the really basic level?

There is/was a Magic Key style one which DS used to like and that has some good activities in it.

Oh that would be good - she likes them. I don't think I have seen that around our way. Was it called Magic Key?

BBC amgazines are generally pretty good, though I haven't actually bought this one.
Though looking at the BBC website I tend to agree with you.
DS is 8 and at least I can get him Match of the Day / Doctor Who ones, which might not appeal so much to girls.

not specifically what you are asking about but my ds loves NG Kids (he is 6.5 but has been having it for nearly a year). Loads of different stuff in it.

Sparkle World seems to be the next step up, but even so the activities pack is not very challenging.

What about National Geographic Kids?

DS is six and loves National Geographic Kids magazine. Its got stuff about wildlife, TV, films, craft, experiments, different countries. Actually, all the grown ups in the family love it too!

This seems to allow you to subscribe to Magic Key, though no info on stockists as such.
OUr local WHSmiths have a good selection though.

Okay - I will look out for the National Geographic one - that might work - I don't think I have ever seen that. I'll have to start going to shops which sell more magazines than just my local Asda! Thanks.

my mum picked up the first NG Kids we had from Tesco.
I then subscribed for ds - using clubcard points.

The Puffin Club seems to have been reborn. I loved it when I was little, tho 5 might be too young...

Thanks. Am quite excited by Magic Key - might subscribe to that if it is monthly rather than weekly - but will go to a bigger stockist and look for some of the other suggestions. It's a pain when some of them (like adult mags) are in a bag so you can't always see inside.

DS used to get it, he is too old for it now. I 'm not sure if it is still available.

They are not in shops, you have to subscribe. They have NO ads in them as well which i like. Ignore the ages though. The Discovery Box one is like the National Geogrpahic kids and my ds1 liked it before the age it says it is for.

nat geo for kids is ok - it's heavily adorned with adverts and branding though right through to the back page unlike the adult version. If you get it through clubcard points though it's worth it.
I think there's a huge gap in the market for a quality children's (monthly) magazine in the uk that's a fair price. The weekly ones are rubbish. We get 2 american mags here Owl Magazines for any expats out there - Chirp for my 4 year old and Chickadee for my 7 year old. They are fab. Not sure what subscription prices are (they are gift from grandparents) . No advertising and a good mix of stories, crafts, puzzles, non fiction stuff.
