Abridged books

hi
I am considering reading an abridged version of Alice in Wonderland to my 3 year old. I think he would enjoy the story, but is certainly not ready for the full version. I have found a nice usborne edition.

But... do you think that reading abridged books to young children could spoil the real thing later on?

I don't see why, if knowing the ending wouldn't spoil it.
Abridged Agatha Christies might take the fun away from the real thing

Yes, but probably not versions for three year olds because they will be so very different, and Alice in Wonderland is quite fairy tale like in any case. dd brought home some abridged books form school when she will be capable of reading the full book in a year or two, which I do see as spoiling future potential reading.

The thing is that there are lots of fabulous books for 3 year olds that he really won't want to read when he's older and which would be a shame for him to miss. So why not wait with Alice until he's ready for the real thing?

I read Alice to my dd when she was about 7 and she loved it. She was old enough to get most of the jokes and we didn't have to stop to explain things too often. It's a brilliant read aloud - but I don't think most children - even good readers - would want to read it for themselves. Reading it aloud means they get it as part of their mental furniture - vital for pub quizzes later in life!

Thanks for all the replies! I think that I will leave Alice for now. I guess I am getting a little impatient (bit sick of dazzling diggers etc etc).

Thanks again. I think we will try some Paddington tonight for a change

I presume you've gone through all the Julia Donaldsons?

Have a look for Martin Waddell - but keep the tissues handy!

Thanks - I've now ordered the Hidden House. We have indeed read most of the Julia Donaldsons even though DS is terrified of gruffalos.

I'm hoping that DS1 takes to the Waddell books. At the moment, his favourite book is the highway code!

You should try the Sam Lloyd books they're great fun and very popular in our house!
