he is 10 but his reading age is much higher...

he has read
the young james bond,
harry potter
lord of the rings
many factual books
george orwell

in fact too many to even remember. Now he is bored with the books he has as he has read them. Any ideas?

John Wyndham - I really liked them as a teenager (had a box set - chocky, DAy of the Triffids, Chrysalids ets) but given he has a high reading age he might like them?

Kevin Crossley Holland
Michael Morpurgo
Douglas Adams- Hitchhiker's Guide
Gerald Durrell
William Price

Sherlock Holmes.

If he liked Harry Potter and Lord of the Rings he might like Th White's The Once and Future King. It would suit a child with an advanced reading age but the subject matter is not as dark as more modern teen books. It's quite funny actually

choosyfloosy · 19/03/2009 13:44

Try him with Great Expectations?

And HG Wells - maybe start with The Time Machine (think that's the title)

stealthsquiggle · 19/03/2009 13:44

Philip Pullman - His Dark Materials?

I liked John Wyndham too, and Gerald Durrell. The latter is probably a better bet if he is a 'worrier', though!

Porpoise · 19/03/2009 13:45

Eragon (and its sequels)?

Percy Jackson series?

Tunnels?

Holes?

TheLadyEvenstar · 19/03/2009 14:05

Ursula Le Guin - The Wizard of Earthsea trilogy.

Latchley · 19/03/2009 16:30

You could also try:

Michelle Paver's 'Wolf Brother' series
Cornelia Funke's 'Inkheart' series
Philip Reeve 'Mortal Engines' etc

William Nicolson 'Windsong'

provinciallady · 19/03/2009 19:15

Alan Garner - 'The Weirdstone of Brisingamen', and 'The Owl Service'
Susan Cooper's 'The Dark is Rising' series
Rosemary Sutcliff - 'The Eagle of the Ninth',
'The Silver Branch' and 'The Lantern Bearers'
Leon Garfield - 'Smith', 'Black Jack' and 'Devil-in-the-Fog'
Might be worth trying Agatha Christie and some of the Roald Dahl short stories?
