Am looking to buy ds a set of books that will help him along with his reading, does anyone know what books are best for this age group?

TIA

What sort of level are we talking, picture, picture and words or chapter?

smellen · 14/03/2009 19:57

Whatever he is interested in I guess. If you are able to read with him, little and often, that will help. The Oxford Reading tree is popular in schools and has a series of books specifically designed to be read at home with parents, so you could try some of those - Red House books (google them) does cheap packs of 12, where you get 3 books at each level.

Hope this helps.

It depends completely on his reading age/ability - you'll have to give us a bit more info! My DS, who is also 6, was reluctant to free-read until he got the first Beastquest book for his birthday and now he races through them. They are chapter books.

madwomanintheattic · 14/03/2009 20:02

horrid henry. there's a junior version with fewer words and more pictures, and you can lead into the other books.
i bought them for all the 6yos parties ladt year, girls and boys. a few mums gave me a funny look, but then later confessed that they had gone down really well even with the pinkest.
don't get the joke books though, unless you want jokes like this told to great aunt maud...

what did the doctor say to the naked man wrapped in clingfilm?

i can clearly see you're (your) nuts.

we have the first pack that smellen mentions and dd seems to be enjoying them as she recognises the characters and words as they are very simialr to her school reading books

ScoobyDoo · 14/03/2009 20:09

I am talking about us reading with him, and helping out, just want him to read more books at home and not just the one school book he brings home each night, he is in middle group for reading and has been stuck on the same level so want to help him move up he is not far off going up.

ok,
so all those recommended
ds2 who is 7, also liked the I am reading range, lots of which come with cd's so you can listen and follow in the book. He particularly liked Captain peppers pets.
Then he moved onto the magic tree house stories, which are chapter books, but very repetitive and are great for boys. There's a knight one, dinosaurs, amazon jungle. Really good.

ScoobyDoo · 14/03/2009 20:26

Thanks have ordered off the red house site, what a great site with good prices i brought the oxford reading tree books with biff & chip etc as ds has been reading them.

I also brought Walkers stories collection 24 books for £25.98 with a free gift am very happy

thank you smellen & thank you everyone else for your suggestions.

what stage of books is he on at school? dd is also 6 and on stage 3, and her teacher is reluctant to discuss her progress with us

ScoobyDoo · 14/03/2009 20:47

Not sure what stage, they do it in coulour groups.

His book at the moment is "footprints on the moon"

I really don't understand why they are not moving him up as he just reads the books through, maybe having to sound out a couple of words but thats it.

I am going to wait a bit longer and then ask why.

Try a joke book. Boys love these.

smugmumofboys · 14/03/2009 20:52

DS1 is 6 and lurves Beastquest. He reads one in an evening! He is a very good reader though, so not sure they will be suitable. The Mr Gum books are great to read with them as well.

clayre · 14/03/2009 21:16

we havent had footprints on the moon, so he seems further on my dd, i think im going to nag her teacher to find out how she is getting on compared to the rest of her class

ScoobyDoo · 19/03/2009 16:00

Guess what after i posted this, ds came home the next day & has now moved up a group

Ds is on Stage 5 i found the stage on the back of his book.

Our new books arrived today and ds is flying through them, am very pleased with them.

thank you all.
