Just had a major flashback to childhood, these books are brilliant! just wanted to share my excitement at rediscovery!

Yes, they are fab aren't they? I've bought loads of these - mostly secondhand - for ds to get into. Dh loves them and has been extra keen to do bedtime stories!

No, RS is not brilliant. In a fit of revenge, my mother unearthed all of my old Richard Scarry books, and I have read Cars and Trucks and Things that Go every day for 3 months. With a detailed discussion on Mistress Mouse, Goldbug, and the bloomin pigs. I keep hiding them, and DS keeps finding them.

My mother says now I know how she felt

I adored the The Great Pie Robbery and rediscovered it at my mothers house recently.
My dc also love it, and I'm thinking of getting more - I prefer the single story books rather than the collections, anyone have any recommendations ?!

I've got my three for my son and he loves them. I think that he particularly likes 'what people do all day' - he does like the great pie robbery - and ours comes with a second 'the supermarket mystery' - he's not keen on 'the great big air book' at the moment.

Yes we love them too - my childhood favourite was 'Richard Scarry's Busy, Busy World' (sadly out of print) which I was lucky enough to find in a charity shop. My DD loves Schmudge, Cucumber, Sergeant Yukon, Glip and Glop, and Smokey! There are lots of posts on Amazon begging for it to be reprinted!

I have a feeling the one I had was 'Richard Scarry's Busy, Busy World' - whatever it was called I loved it.

Does it also feature a character called Couscous?

Couscous the Algerian Detective? At least one of the Richard Scarry books has him in it. I loved Pierre Bear - you can't get Scarry books with this story in any more because he shoots a seal for its fur (fair enough, I suppose) but I still have my old copy. Both the dcs love Richard Scarry

ha, yes my brother had one (I've inherited that one), to learn English (we lived on the continent). My dc like them and I think it's nice. For the younger ones you can just keep talking about all the things on the pictures.

My sister thinks there is something strange about the way Lowly Worm disappears from the books... to be replaced in the later ones by Goldbug...

Great Big Schoolhouse was another good one - not as mad as Busy Busy World or Cars and Trucks, but still good fun like all of them.

I definitely learned more from Richard Scarry than I did from school, in the early days.

The other bit that I think I remember from Busy Busy World was a plane full of animals (flying home from Rio?) and the plane being packed so full that the tacks were bulging at seams and then a tiny little ant (Aunty Ant?) getting on and being the last straw in the manner of a waffer thin mint and it all bursting open.

It'll be a totally different book now...
