Just had a major flashback to childhood, these books are brilliant! just wanted to share my excitement at rediscovery!

Yes, they are fab aren't they? I've bought loads of these - mostly secondhand - for ds to get into. Dh loves them and has been extra keen to do bedtime stories!

CMOTDibbler · 13/03/2009 13:16

No, RS is not brilliant. In a fit of revenge, my mother unearthed all of my old Richard Scarry books, and I have read Cars and Trucks and Things that Go every day for 3 months. With a detailed discussion on Mistress Mouse, Goldbug, and the bloomin pigs. I keep hiding them, and DS keeps finding them.

My mother says now I know how she felt

dogtanianrocks · 13/03/2009 13:59

yes I do remember them being serious favourites!

we love them in this house too

norflondoner · 13/03/2009 14:05

I adored the The Great Pie Robbery and rediscovered it at my mothers house recently.
My dc also love it, and I'm thinking of getting more - I prefer the single story books rather than the collections, anyone have any recommendations ?!

mistlethrush · 13/03/2009 14:24

I've got my three for my son and he loves them. I think that he particularly likes 'what people do all day' - he does like the great pie robbery - and ours comes with a second 'the supermarket mystery' - he's not keen on 'the great big air book' at the moment.

provinciallady · 14/03/2009 12:06

Yes we love them too - my childhood favourite was 'Richard Scarry's Busy, Busy World' (sadly out of print) which I was lucky enough to find in a charity shop. My DD loves Schmudge, Cucumber, Sergeant Yukon, Glip and Glop, and Smokey! There are lots of posts on Amazon begging for it to be reprinted!

Scarletibis · 14/03/2009 13:52

I have a feeling the one I had was 'Richard Scarry's Busy, Busy World' - whatever it was called I loved it.

Does it also feature a character called Couscous?

snickersnack · 14/03/2009 13:58

Couscous the Algerian Detective? At least one of the Richard Scarry books has him in it. I loved Pierre Bear - you can't get Scarry books with this story in any more because he shoots a seal for its fur (fair enough, I suppose) but I still have my old copy. Both the dcs love Richard Scarry

bronze · 14/03/2009 14:00

it was busy busy world. I have all my old ones on dss bookshelves

Lowly worm rocks

thirdname · 14/03/2009 14:03

ha, yes my brother had one (I've inherited that one), to learn English (we lived on the continent). My dc like them and I think it's nice. For the younger ones you can just keep talking about all the things on the pictures.

Molesworth · 14/03/2009 14:05

Oh! Richard Scarry was my favourite when I was little! I made my mum read "Is this the house of mistress mouse?" about 874 billion times

Hassled · 14/03/2009 14:09

Bananas Gorilla and his banana car - I loved him. And the Huckle cat family. And the pictures of ice creams and cakes and stuff...

sfxmum · 14/03/2009 14:11

busy busy world is a must every night much to my dismay, it is not that I don't like it but still...
dd loves Pierre ans sergeant Yukon

provinciallady · 14/03/2009 14:53

This is worth a look for all Richard Scarry fans....

Shitemum · 14/03/2009 14:55

My sister thinks there is something strange about the way Lowly Worm disappears from the books... to be replaced in the later ones by Goldbug...

vesela · 14/03/2009 19:52

Great Big Schoolhouse was another good one - not as mad as Busy Busy World or Cars and Trucks, but still good fun like all of them.

I definitely learned more from Richard Scarry than I did from school, in the early days.

Scarletibis · 16/03/2009 13:46

The other bit that I think I remember from Busy Busy World was a plane full of animals (flying home from Rio?) and the plane being packed so full that the tacks were bulging at seams and then a tiny little ant (Aunty Ant?) getting on and being the last straw in the manner of a waffer thin mint and it all bursting open.

It'll be a totally different book now...
