Hi, I'd like to find some lovely books for my 4 year old daughter. I like the sentimental ones that have good morals in them. I also like rhyming text.
She loves The snail and the wail and no matter what. What are your favourite books suitable for a 4 year old?

My favourites are the Lauren Child books, which are fantastically silly and beautifully illustrated: not rhyming or moralistic though. How about a lovely edition of Charles Perrault's versions of the classic fairy tales?

DS2 is 4.6 and loves Julia Donaldson (eg the gruffalo et al) with illustrsations by Axel Scheffler - excellent rhyming text and fab picures

JustCallMeGoat · 05/03/2009 19:14

who will comfort toffle is lovely.

emily brown books

TotalChaos · 05/03/2009 19:16

Aliens Love Underpants is great fun, well written and rhyming text - wouldn't say it was sentimental though.

Sharing a shell by Julia Donaldson is lovely, more rhythmic than rhyming iyswim.

Mog books by Judith Kerr are lovely too, no rhymes though...

Will have a further think and come back to this.....

Thank you, I'll look out for those. Her favourate books are little Bar and Peepo, which are probubly too young for her now.

Dd2 is 4 and loves the Lotta books and Naughty Little Sister.

Also Alfie stories and at the moment, Percy the Park Keeper.

TotalChaos · 05/03/2009 19:22

Lost and Found and How to Catch a star by Oliver Jeffers are lovely and positive, again no rhymes.

Each Peach Pear Plum is by the same author as Peepo, and has rhyming text.

The Fish who Could Wish by John Bush/Korky Paul - rhyming and has a moral kind of.

mummyloveslucy · 05/03/2009 19:27

Oh yes, each peach pear plum was my favourate childhood book. My daughter loves it too and knows all the words.

Jez Alborough's teddy books (Eddie's off to find his teddy, Eddie's teddy's name is Freddy . . .I can still recite them & dd is now nearly 7!). DD also loved his Duck in a Truck books (although I'm not sure they have much moral to them).

Aranea · 05/03/2009 19:44

DD1 is 4 and loves naughty little sister too.

Also the Faraway Tree books (a bit grim from my point of view, but they do go down very well with her).

And the Winnie the Pooh stories are a big hit and have her shrieking with laughter. Not sure how I'll cope when I get to the last one - it always makes me cry!

We found a lovely book called Where Did All the Dragons Go? in a charity shop, which has beautiful illustrations and rhyming text.

Stick Man from the Gruffalo team is lovely.

TigerFeet · 05/03/2009 19:47

Korky Paul books are fantastic, my 4yo loves them. The Dog Who Could Dig is rhyming and is really good fun.

LilianGish · 05/03/2009 19:55

Dd loved Can You Catch a Mermaid by Jane Ray (not rhyming, but gorgeously illustrated). Also Milly Molly Mandy.

MadMazza · 05/03/2009 19:56

Definitely the Alfie and Annie Rose books - my two boys adore these and we read the same stories over and over again; they roar with laughter at them!

TigerFeet · 05/03/2009 19:59

Felicity Wishes is good too.

strawberrycornetto · 05/03/2009 20:06

My daughter is 4 and likes the same books. I'd also recommend more Julia Donaldson, we are into Tiddler and Charlie Cook's Favourite Book at the moment. We have also joined the library and get lots out of the library now. And another one that reads nicely is The Cat in the Hat.

christywhisty · 05/03/2009 20:09

Hutchinson Treasury of Childrens Literacy

Is a lovely book with many classics old and modern in it.

MilaMae · 06/03/2009 12:59

My dd loves the Hairy Mclarey books and the Madeline ones which have good rhyming text in them.

She's currently into fairy tales big time anything and everything. Just bought her the Usborne illustrated fairy tales as recommended on here it's lovely, the one with a ribbon bookmark in,nice size.

The Bog Baby, Dandelion and Knuffle Bunny Too are 3 of her favs at the mo all have morals and are fantastic books with good quality illustrations, I love all 3 of them!!!!!!!!

The Lauren Child Goldilocks is fab too.

nailpolish · 06/03/2009 13:02

Ruby Flew Too and This Way Ruby! are my dds favourites

Ruby Flew Too makes me cry

UnquietDad · 06/03/2009 13:04

Blue Kangaroo series by Emma Chichester Clark. DD loved these when she was younger.

provinciallady · 06/03/2009 14:02

My dd loves 'The Lion Who Wanted to Love' by Giles Andreae, which has beautiful illustrations by David Wojtowycz. Rhyming text and a touching story, about Leo a lion who lacks the killer instinct, and is banished from the pride by his own mum! Leo makes friends with and helps other animals who look after him in turn. A dramatic event proves to his mum how wrong she was, and Leo ends up King of the Pride! The same author and artist have produced other books of 'rollicking rhymes' including 'Commotion in the Ocean' and 'Rumble in the Jungle' - both excellent.

choosyfloosy · 06/03/2009 14:07

I find many children at 4 will sit spellbound for The Mousehole Cat but you have to be up for reading it, it's so long!

DS had a bizarre passion for Dashing Dog. Well, not that bizarre, it's lovely, wonderful rhymes, great pictures.

smallorange · 06/03/2009 14:07

Room on the Broom and Winnie the Witch are real favourites in our house. As are the ladybird classic fairytales oh, and Green Eggs and Ham, "I do not like it Sam-I-am!"

As others have said, My naughty Little Sister, v. popular, we have it on CD read by Jan Francis.

MorocconOil · 06/03/2009 14:16

DD almost 4, is really loving Lauren Child's version of Princess and the Pea, and Goldilocks.

The Hairy Maclarey books are good for rhymes.

DD loves the Topsy and Tim books as well, though they make me yawn.

smallorange · 06/03/2009 14:19

The Smartest Giant in Town has a lovely moral as well.

mummyloveslucy · 06/03/2009 18:18

Thanks everyone. I've got lots to look out for now.
