Books for a 5 yr old boy?

It is my DS1's 5th birthday in March. He is in reception and is making good progress with his reading but I want to make sure he still loves reading as a pasttime as well.

He loves Where's Wally type books, the Magic Treehouse books, the Usborne Puzzle books and this book here that we got him for Christmas has been a real hit (every bloody night!).

What other books would you recommend?

Do you books he can read to himself or ones for you to read to him atm?

We bought ds1 (who was 5 in Dec) the complete set of Happy Families books (20, I think) from the Book People. He absolutely adores them and has a couple read to him every bedtime . They're quite humorous and the illustrations are fab.

Atm books we can read together (read to him!)really want him to love reading and try and entice him to want to read by himself.
Happy Families series is noted, thanks

There are 4 Allan Ahiberg books which I would recommend: The Cat who got carried away; The man who wore all his clothes; the woman who won things; and one other too.... They are easy readers so in a year he'll be able to read them to himself, but int he mean time he will enjoy hearing them being read to him. They are silly, funny stories and likely to have him giggling.

Usborne do a series called First Readers which ds1 also loves. They're a mix of ordinary fiction (Percy and the Pirates, The Dinosaur who Lost his Roar) and retold cultural tales like Baba Yaga the Flying Witch, The Dragon Painter, The Fish Who Talked, The Leopard and the Sky Dog). I think there's 10 of them altogether but they are more 'boy' orientated than many books.

Oh and Dr Seuss - The Cat in the Hat, Fox in Socks, etc. Ridiculous (and impossible to read!) but apparently highly amusing to 5yo boys.

Lizzylou · 08/02/2009 20:36

OOh, thanks both
Lots of choice for me DS1

I have read all the Horrid Henry Books to my dc1. 6 now, but we read the first when she was 5 and she just had to hear the rest.

peachface · 08/02/2009 20:37

The Julia Donaldson/Axel Schaeffer books - Room on the Broom, Monkey Puzzle etc. My ds (will also be 5 in March) loves them and the rhyming verse is lovely. Aliens love underpants is also a good one.
My ds also a big Where's Wally fan so the Benedict Blathwayt Little Red Train books are fun becsuee the illustrations are so detailed - we spend twice a smuch time looking at the details in the pictures on each page as we do reading the words!

This is a really tricky age imo.

He's getting big for picture books (tho mine wtill love a bit of Scheffler/Donaldson) but way too old for Roald Dahl (unless you are reading...and maybe even then).

Usborne do a nice range of storybooks for more confident readers; also we have enjoyed Red Nose Readers here which he will probably read to himself.

Yes Happy Families are good too.

Horrid Henry?

Oh Olihan, Fox in Socks, "Let's have a talk about tweetle beetles..."

MorocconOil · 08/02/2009 20:43

Flat Stanley series
Dirty Bertie series

Lizzylou · 08/02/2009 20:52

Thanks such a lot, tried to get those red nose readers and they are out of stock, but I can keep trying.
Have a feeling our books shelves willbe getting fuller!

Mister Gum! "You're A Bad Man Mr Gum" is the first one. There are about eight in all. Andy Stanton is the author, and I will eat my wig if your five-year-old doesn't love them.

Carbonel · 08/02/2009 21:09

Captain underpants is always a hit

Jack Stalwart

Max Flash

Superpowers

the animal ark ones can be Ok but are often a bit 'girlie'

Secret seven

'Tiger terror' series

any of the non fiction sets (DK Eyewonder / Kingfisher Young knowledge etc) which you can dip into and out of are fab for boys

The I can read series are great too as they have different levels and lots of books boys love like transformers, Star Wars etc

My 6 year old ds reads all these himself now - we started reading them with him and the story took over and he wanted the next one in the series etc. and read them himself at times other than bedtime.

Children love being read to - my dd (7) and I often read together too

Carbonel · 08/02/2009 21:11

Oh and he still loves picture books - this is one of his favourites atm

Lizzylou · 08/02/2009 21:22

We have Captain Underpants, big hit.
Thanks so much all, will be flexing the debit card (may have to be credit card now!) on Amazon.
