In our (vain) efforts to get DD1 to have a sleep, or at least a "rest" at lunchtime, we have bought a small CD player for her room. I want to get some story CDs for her to listen to.

Does anyone have any recommendations? I did a quick search on Amazon but really can't tell from the listings whether anything is any good or not.

as she is quiet young , I would think nursery rhymes might be good or audio books like the gruffalo, I'm going on a bear hunt , The hungry caterpillar etc. We have the bear hunt one and as the story is quite short , it repeats again and has a song to string it out abit. You don't want to be up and down the stairs, setting it up again for her..

Our dd, 2.something, likes the Large Family. We have a set of books and an audio CD so she can look at books and listen.

Thanks all - esp. popmum for reminding me about the library. I will go next week.

My 2.7 year old DD's favourites for the car are Dogger, Dr Seuss ABC, Elmer and nursery rhymes.

You can buy books that come with the story also on CD, I think Waterstones do them usually on special offer.

How weird...not half an hour ago I was on amazon searching for stories on cd for our 2.7 year old dd, and agree that you can't tell which would be appropriate.

She has some fairy stories (very simple versions, but still a bit sinister in places!)which I think were from a set at Early Learning Centre, called "Favourite Stories", which she loves and listens to over and over, and I'd like to get her something else.

Any more ideas?

Look on the Book People, Red House, School Link and Bananas book websites for book & CD packs. I'll second the library also, I have ordered/reserved online many audio childrens book on my childs library cards which doesn't seem to cost anything.

I can recommend (on audio)
Any Julia Donaldson (esp Sharing a Shell)
Man on the Moon (Simon Bartram)
Hairy Maclary
Winnie the Witch
The Snowman

We have a lovely Mick Inkpen collection with 'Lullabyhullaballoo' on it which is ds's favourite at the moment.
