So come on, who wants to be in my gang?? I have just seen a trailer for 'the mystery of moonacre' or some such crap and it's made me wonder why they felt the need to change it? And Ioan Grufford as Sir Benjamin? Pffftttt. I loved this book as a child, my mum gave me her copy and I have it all saved for dd to have in a few years but now she has seen the trailer and has asked if we can go and see it, when I just want to wail noooooooooo I will read it to you (I think 4 is maybe a bit young anyhow ) I seem to remember that they made it into a TV series about 10 years ago and screwed it up then too. Why????? So, let the first club meeting commence. If you were to cast this film, who would be in it? I can't work out wether Natascha McElhone as Loveday is brilliant or just wrong. Isn't she meant to be older??

OrmIrian - you're right to panic - be afraid, be very afraid. It was absolutely mind-boggling terrible. Read the book again, and don't be tempted, no matter what, to watch the film. Because you will regret it. I'm still suffering because I was foolish enough to watch it.

paranoidmother · 27/01/2009 11:37

Oh I love this book, it's one as an adult it's always to near by when I want a lovely book to read. Can't believe they've changed the name.

littlelamb · 27/01/2009 13:12

I read on the Wiki page that apparently they put the namechange to a vote with fans. Is there a rival fanclub somewhere???! Surely not

I will join but I could not bear to see the film and have it ruined so I plan to live in the kitchen with Marmaduke Scarlet until all the fuss in over.

MarmadukeScarlet · 29/01/2009 12:45

(Sorry have been with DS in hospital for a few days)

I have reread 'The dark is rising' series recently, still as thrilling will not be seeing that either.

I'm a fan too. Gave it to nieces and god daughters for Christmas.

NilDesperandum · 29/01/2009 13:16

love the book but will be boycotting the film i'm afraid.

cannot bear my favourite books to be messed around with

SmallerClanger · 09/02/2009 21:40

sorry to be late. I also adore Little White Horse & have been waiting to share it with DDs (4 & 6)& now this film arrives. part of me wants to see it or let DDs see it - but they ought to read book first.
maria's room - so perfect - would love that round house! Also base dream houses on childhood books. I have a drawer fetish due to Laura Ingalls-Wilder's first house which had little drawers for flour sugar etc. When it burned down I was distraught.
Dark is Rising series are other classics I want to pass on. Terrified that they may not share my passions though.

differentCupID · 09/02/2009 21:41

I always saw Sir Benjamin as a Brian Blessed type.

SmallerClanger · 09/02/2009 21:45

Think it is time to read LWH again.

Friends, I have sinned. I took dd to see this in the cinema kids club today. Im my defence it was £1.70 to get us both in on an otherwise boring day. The only thing I liked about it was Digweed. Robin looked like he should be in MGMT. Here's the evidence MGMT Robin
I feel thoroughly sullied

Lamb, I was thinking about this thread at the weekend.

I also confess that I went to see it with DD (and DS but he had no choice in that) at the Lakeside Vue Kids club for £1.70 on Mon 13th - which one were you at?

DD loved it, I muttered all the way through.

littlelamb · 27/04/2009 11:15

We were at the Exeter Vue. I promised dd that I would read her the book but I think at 4 she is probably too young. It was just sooooo different to the book. I did like Digweed. But seriousy, the rest was just baaaaaaaaaaaad. And whoever did the costume design made it look like they didn't have enough material for Maria's dresses- what was the whole skeleton dress look about?? And why did they make Robin somuch older than Maria??? God I could go on, but it wil wind me up

All that bizarre fabric-free-boning-only bustle stuff at the back? and what was with the turquise ribbon round the neck of MM and the governess? and the feathers sticking out on Robin like some strange choirboys ruff? and 'normal' clothes on MM's uncle (who was a pleasant asthetic diversion I felt ) compared to all the weird costumes/make up?

littlelamb · 27/04/2009 14:30

Yes!
And where the hell was Wiggins???!
