OK, I confess I'm a bit addicted to these books! From Mr Gum and the Goblins:

"What if..." squeaked Alan Taylor, bravely weeing himself in fear. "What if it's Mr Gum?"

Bumping for you.

MinaLoy · 09/01/2009 20:42

Thank you for bumping! I am agog that no-one has responded........does it mean that the genius of Andy Stanton's Mr Gum books is unappreciated by MNetters? IT CAN'T BE TRUE!

my dd LOVES Mr Gum, esp the audio book of "You're A Bad Man, Mr Gum"

she loves the chapter that is just him making a cup of tea

iheartdusty · 09/01/2009 21:48

we have started recently, on book 4 (the Power Crystals)

the dcs mainly love the suspense and the comic repetition, so hard to reproduce it on MN!

lots of giggles every night though, we will definitely seek out the rest.

MinaLoy · 10/01/2009 14:43

O good, I'm not alone. Thanks iheartdusty and dinny! But I do really think these books are a time-bomb waiting to explode into the nation's consciousness...because my (very good) library only stocks the first two in the series, and a couple of primary-school teachers of my acquaintance haven't even heard of them.

I remember years ago, babysitting some kids who went on and on and on endlessly about a book they were being read by their mum, and I went ho hum that's nice, or words to that effect, when I should really have been asking my book-seller husband to order me a couple of first editions of, yes, you guessed it - the first Harry Potter. Mr Gum is gonna be big!

Oo, I've just started reading the first Mr Gum book to ds. He was in fits over the 'Mr Gum makes a cup of tea' chapter.

I'm looking forward to reading more Mr Gum with him. At least it's cured him of his Horrid Henry obsession for the time being.

Merrylegs · 10/01/2009 15:01

Who likes bears? Everyone likes bears. I likes bears, you likes bears, this guy I know called Will Bulman likes bears. They are truly the king of the jungle. They are nature's way of saying 'here's what bears look like.' They are the best. They are the bears.

ClementFreudsGreatestAdmirer · 10/01/2009 15:05

MinaLoy, can i just point you in the direction of The Giggler Treatment by Roddy Doyle, and its sequels....i think you'll love them - there's something of the mr gum about them.

ChirpyGirl · 10/01/2009 15:05

What age are your dc's? I'd love to introduce DD to them but she is far too young yet I think....she's 3 next month.

Tidgypuds · 10/01/2009 15:14

Oh we love Mr Gums books here, mentined them on a horrid Henry thread a while back but it was completely overlooked.
I roar laughing at these books the are brilliant.

My favourite line - There are so many that I have howled at, wil get back to you.

My DS 7 has been reading these and is on the last one but fortunatley there is a rumor that another is due out march

MinaLoy · 10/01/2009 16:38

Merrylegs I took my Mr Gum obsession to work (an oriental rug shop) and my boss read out the first lines of "Mr Gum and the Dancing Bear" and I watched nervously but my colleagues responded properly, (ie by screaming). I was so chuffed! Have you read all the way through though? There is a bit when they get to the jungle that is just the most gorgeous prose, sigh, swoon. I'm glad to have found some Mr Gummers!

And thanks Clement, I will get on the trail of the Roddy Doyles. ChirpyGirl my DCs are too small - I love these books for ME!

The docks! Where life was cheap and death was on special offer all year round....

(DS has just finished Mr G and the DB.)

Just fab.

I think it's the effortless sense of humour, like he just writes whatever comes into his head, with completely random characters.

For eg, why should a gingerbread headmaster work? Don't know. It just does.

MaryAnnSingleton · 10/01/2009 17:58

ds loves Mr Gum books !

treacletart · 10/01/2009 18:03

We got the set for Christmas and DH and I argue over who gets to read them to DS (5). They're hysterical. I particularly like Chapter 4 of "You're a bad man.." Mr Gum has a cup of tea DS loves "Bag of Sticks" and "Bag of Sticks the CHristmas special"

treacletart · 10/01/2009 18:05

Oh and Polly's real name...

Tidgypuds · 10/01/2009 18:06

What merrylegs said, the tangents, characters and wicked sense of effortless humour.
My DS just lent his 'your a bad man Mr Gum to my brother.....he is 28 and reads them and laughs out loud!

catinthehat1 · 10/01/2009 18:09

If you get the chance to see Andy Stanton live at a book presentation, just drop everything and go. He is such a bright funny man, adults and children thought he was great. He had queues of children with their thumbed copies of books (1 & 2 at the time) waiting to have them signed. The books have been rad repeatedly, and I am getting them very slowly so each one gets a lot of use before going on to the next one.

MinaLoy · 11/01/2009 11:05

Right I am going to ask the boss-ladies if we can have him on for a live web chat. I was looking at the Egmont website and in the Ask Andy Stanton a question bit, was someone saying "Dear Andy Stanton, are you married? love from your future wife." If he came on MN he might find himself similarly propositioned I think!

My DS is addicted to the Mr. Gum books!

My favourite bit is chapter 4 of You're a bad man mister gum. Needless to say DS's favourite line is when Mr. Gum starts a fire by setting light to his fart (I think that's in book 2)

Wallace · 18/01/2009 07:42

Never heard of these...

Will be trying to get them!
