....can anyone suggest a good one(s)? It is for dd (almost 8) who is a complete novice, and my rusty chess skills render me virtually a complete novice too!

Are there any good online sites for playing that are safe for children?

Thanks for your help.

www.amazon.co.uk/Interplay-UK-QG001-Quick-Chess/dp/B00008OS3H
hope this link works. We bought it for ds's 6th birthday just over a year ago and its brill. We all learned from scratch with it. It takes you thru various games with the piees to learn the moves, 1st you juxst play with the pawns, then you play with them and the bishops and work your way on til you are playing with all pieces, i'd really recommend it

From what age do children generally learn chess? Just curious, DS is waaaaaay too young but I really enjoyed it as a child, just can't remember when I learned or indeed how I did!

so the link didnt work and i posted it twice just go to amazon and tupe in 'quick chess'

ChasingSquirrels · 08/01/2009 21:43

i taught ds1 at coming upto 5, I was rusty but knew all the basic moves - so enough to teach him, but not enough to let him win - lol.

hi earlybird, just a note to say its not a book but an actual chess board and pieces along with instructions to play loads of games with fewer pieces, leading up to playing with all of them

Thanks Theresa, gradually adding pieces sounds an interesting way of learning.

Another vote for Quick Chess. Having sat in on a couple of chess lessons at this age recently it does seem to be very similar to the way in which these were taught.

ds1 has a Nintendo DS chess game, which is quite fun, and you get to learn all the moves and different strategies. (I enjoy those games anyway, but I'm still completely rubbish at chess: my brain's just not big enough! I start thinking of some of the possible moves and counter-moves, then quickly get bored and just move anywhere!)

We just taught the boys when they were 3 or 4 using a regular chess board. We started playing a game just using pawns and the King, then adding in each piece one at a time, whilst you got the hang of the different pieces.
