hello,
my neice is struggling at school with some of her english work, especially comprehension tasks. She enjoys reading but Ive only ever seen the 'princess...' series and some high school musical books in her room. Ive flicked through the pages, they don't really look too great in terms of helping her to widen her vocab.
I can only think of R.Dhal books, my mind has gone blank.
Would love a list of really enjoyable books for her to work her way through, any recommendations greatly appreciated...

The Famous Five (dd ADORES them)
The Moomin books

The Septimus Heap series of books by Angie Sage are good - not too hard to read, but good stories. They are very long books, but with short chapters.

The Worst Witch series by Jill Murphy,

Little House in the Big Woods, Little House on the Prairie, On the Banks of Plum Creek by Laura Ingalls Wilder,

The Lives of Christopher Chant, Charmed Life, Witch Week, The Magicians of Caprona, Mixed Magics, The Pinhoe Egg, The Ogre Downstairs, Dogsbody, A Tale of Time City, Wilkins' Tooth, Howl's Moving Castle and Castle in the Air by Diana Wynne Jones,

Ballet Shoes, White Boots, The Circus is Coming and The Growing Summer by Noel Streatfeild,

The Wolves of Willoughby Chase, Black Hearts in Battersea, Nightbirds on Nantucket, The Cuckoo Tree, Midnight is a Place by Joan Aiken

Everything on shitehawk's list and anything else by E Nesbit. But when it came to Enid Blyton my daughter preferred the "Mystery" series to the "Famous Five".

My dd adores anything by Jacqueline Wilson and she is in year 4.

My year four girl is reading the Lady Grace books - a series of Tudor mysteries by Patricia Finney. She also likes the The World According to Humphrey, the younger Jacqueline Wilsons, Secret Unicorn, Little House on the Prairie and a lot of Michael Morpurgo books.
