DS2, who is 5, adores the Dinosaur Cove books by Rex Stone.

He is obsessed with dinosaurs.

The books are about two boys who discover a cave through which they are able to go back in time to the land of the dinosaurs. There are a lot of books in the series and in each one they have an adventure where they investigate a different type of dinosaur.

According to DS2, who is more of an expert on the subject than I am, the author gets his facts right.

DS2 is not that keen on fiction - loves fact books, mainly about dinosaurs (do you see a theme emerging), but is happy to read these books to himself. They have pictures on each page, but are chapter books.

I read the first few to him, but when I agreed to buy him one when we were in Waterstones last weeek I made it conditionally on his trying to read it himself.

He finished it in the car before we got home (Miracle!)

Not too advanced no.

And if you are the one reading them aloud they are not too boring.

a set of fact books, ds had a "my best book of xxx" set just before he was 5 - dinosaurs, volcanos, sharks, etc. I think there was 12 of them. Can't find a link, but these are nice.

A childrens atlas, probably around £5.

and some fiction.

We have so much non fiction - DS loves it and holds so many facts in his head. Will check out the dinosaur cove ones as I do like reading stories as well.

I have a dd, but I wonder if your ds would like the How to Train Your Dragon books by Cressida Cowell. They were recommended to DD by a boy, and I know other boys in her class like them too. They are fun to read aloud and have funny pix too.

Have a look at the book people site...great value! www.thebookpeople.co.uk or for something a bit different look at www.love2read.co.uk

We have just worked our way through DS1's collection of Sir Gadabout books with DS2 who is 5. He loved them and DH and I enjoyed reading them to him as they are quite funny. These are the ones

The website I have linked to is really good too (www.lovereadng4kids) - you can search by age and get some really good ideas. You can also download extracts to see if the books are any good.

There are some lovely children's encyclopedias as well is he likes factual stuff. Loads to look at and later, when he is able, to read.

My 4 year old loves being read the Mr Gum book series, by Andy Stanton I think.

They are hilarious, and he'll love reading them again when he's older, as they have a lot in them that he won't understand until then, but for now he loves the language used, and the graphic descriptions of things.

Plus you will love them yourself.

Old Bun and the Burglars. Short (4 chapters) book - about a mouse who is duped by some rats (who pose as Security Guards) and try to nick his cheese.
