Good bedtime books for 2.5 year old?

LauraGas · 08/12/2008 20:03

Can anyone recommend any good bedtime books for a (fairly bright) 2.5year old? He loves Peepo and Each Peach Pear Plum and also Mr Men (. Wondered if there was any collection of bedtime stories aimed at younger kids?

Anything by Julia Donaldson & Axel wotsit really - Gruffalo, Room on the Broom etc. You won't get fed to the back teeth with them either

MrsMattie · 08/12/2008 20:06

I was going to suggest The Gruffalo, too.

Or 'Bear Hunt'.

rubyslippersisappearinginpanto · 08/12/2008 20:06

the wibbly pig books are lovely

DS is a BIG fan

Meg and Mog

The Gruffalo

Calm Down Boris

LauraGas · 08/12/2008 20:09

Ooh, great - he's got The Gruffalo and Bear Hunt coming from Father Christmas (and his godmother!). Thanks guys!

Dig Dig Digging

GColdtimer · 08/12/2008 20:11

The Hairy Maclary books are great.
And the Little Tiger Press books are all pretty good - favourites are Laura's Star, I don't want to go to bed & Little Dancer.

Oh and "All afloat on Noah's Boat" is really lovely.

GodzRestYeMerryBumcheek · 08/12/2008 20:11

don't really know of any collection, besides maybe Kipper.
I heartily agree with the recommendation of Julia Donaldson and Axel Scheffler (sp?).

Also i would add 'Where's My Cuddle?' and 'Aaaargh, Spider!' to the list as they are brill (i stood and read them in the shop...the spider one has sparkley webs in which i DD was particularly enticed by).

ben5 · 08/12/2008 20:13

mine also love hairy maclary and mr. men

GColdtimer · 08/12/2008 20:13

Oh and The Smartest Giant in Town and anything by Shirley Hughes.

RhinestoneReindeerHerder · 08/12/2008 20:15

Snail and the Whale is a favourite Donaldson & Scheffler in this house, DS is about same age and is book fiend. He also loves (although I'm not quite so keen) Dr Seuss, particularly The Cat in the Hat and Green Eggs & Ham. Also Funny Bones, which is Alberg, and there are various diff ones.

MumtoCharlieandLola · 08/12/2008 20:16

Oh, we love, guess how much I love you ?

It makes you feel all squidgy !

LauraGas · 08/12/2008 20:18

Have actually got Laura's Star and Laura's Christmas Star (my name's Laura if you haven't guessed from my unoriginal nickname) which my sister got me a few years ago. Apparently I looked like the little girl in them when I was little Will get them down from the shelf and read to DS!

helen cooper books?

Lizzylou · 08/12/2008 20:19

Owl Babies is the current favourite of my 2 3/4 yr old, my DS1 loved (still loves in fact) it too.
Also Ten Terrible Dinosaurs, The Tiger who came to tea and Mog books.

EffiePerine · 08/12/2008 20:28

DS's current favourites:

And the train goes (William Donaldson)
Thomas the Tank Engine and Gordon the Big Engine (the original Rev Awdry books)
Haunted House - Jan Pienowski
Winnie Flies Again - Korky Paul

TBH I pick out picture books I like the look of and see if he gets on with them.

GColdtimer · 08/12/2008 20:40

lauragas, I didn't realise there was a Laura's Christmas Star. I am going to have to get it for DD for christmas. She loves the book and loves the little girl in it. Hope your DS enjoys it.

I second the vote for the hairey Maclarey Books

good value here

Louandben · 08/12/2008 20:47

Someone Bigger, by Jonathan Emmett is lovely - it was my DS's favourite for at least a year, we had to read it so many times he (and we) could recite it by heart (freak)!

spula · 08/12/2008 20:53

Some Dogs Do by Jez Alborough - simply beautiful!

LilRedWG · 08/12/2008 20:54

DD loves Burglar Bill, by the Albergs.

Katerina75 · 08/12/2008 20:57

Where the Wild Things are and In the Night Kitchen - both fab books, with great illustrations

Lizzylou · 08/12/2008 20:58

OOh gosh yes, Where the wild things are is FAB
Second/Third the Hairy McClary books.

Lizzylou · 08/12/2008 20:59

OOh, and The Night Pirates

EmmaDilemma · 08/12/2008 20:59

One Snowy Night by Nick Butterworth

Goodnight Moon by Margaret Wise Brown is almost the perfect bedtime rhyme, DS2 loves it at 14 months but so does DS1 at 3.4

MerrySibhmas · 08/12/2008 20:59

I found out yesterday that DD1 knows half of Laura's Star off by heart, and she would be delighted with the Christmas one. Isn't it a bit odd though that she has no friends and that her parents throw a party when she's sad instead of asking her what's wrong? [fgrub]

We love The Tiger who came to Tea and the Mog stories, all by Judith Kerr. Dig, Dig, Digging and its sequel Emergency are huge hits too, especially if you sing the verses.

It might be a bit early for Benedict Blathwayt's Little Red Train books, but they are wonderful for poring over.

And I'd second the vote for the Little Tiger press books -- they are generally great.
