Which is your most hated book for reading aloud to your DCs

BarcodeZebra · 04/12/2008 20:35

It has to be almost any of the Mr Men books, for me. They are unreadable. I seriously doubt that anyone bothered to read them aloud at any point during the editorial process (a criticism that could be leveled at any number of books published today too.)Reading them aloud is like the verbal equivalent of walking barefoot over broken bricks.

Come on, dish the dirt. Which ones really make your heart sink when your child hands them to you to read out?

@GetKnitted

I know this is an old thread, but I needed somewhere to scream I HATE FIREMAN BLOODY SAM!

Ahhhh and relax Blush

I feel your pain. I spent the whole of my second labour with the theme tune from FS in my head.
ShatnersBassoon · 05/07/2012 20:51

We're Going on a Bear Hunt. So plodding and wearing.

OliviaLMumsnet · 05/07/2012 20:53

That one's banned from my house Shatner.

COCKadoodledooo · 05/07/2012 20:59

Right now the Snail and the Freaking Whale. I have read it eleventy gazillion times this week.

Dh has just glanced at the thread and asked if I remembered Pudding. It was ds1's favourite. I have just recited it word for word, and have no idea where the book is may now have to kill dh for getting it stuck in my head again

stressheaderic · 05/07/2012 21:00

Guess How Much I Love You bores the tits off me. I'm especially annoyed as someone bought us the 'gift' edition which is ginormous, and therefore, un-hideable.

I could read Rosie's Hat every night for a thousand years and still love it.

EugenesAxe · 05/07/2012 21:02

'The Bravest Ever Bear'. It has 'best book for reading aloud' accolade on the back but it's shite. The only children it might possibly work for are those aged about 3-4, who are with it enough to recognise the changes of 'person' from the perspective of the narrative but who aren't old enough to read. Toddlers are baffled; I reckon it would be a rubbish book for an early reader.

Mr Men are bad for very young children or those with poor attention span because there's a lot of prose and little picture diversity. But I love/loved the stories!

StaceymReadyForNumber3 · 05/07/2012 21:20

Thomas the sodding tank engine!!

notheroldie · 05/07/2012 21:23

I'm glad someone mentioned, 'We're going on a bear hunt', I really wished the bear ate them, end of story.

Spot books, oh look hes hiding again. yawn.

Cat in the Ruddy Hat. Waaaaaay too long, even when I skip half of it.

Farmer Dan. I put those in a charity bag only to find my ds's digging them out and questioning me about them.

ChippingInNeedsCoffee · 05/07/2012 21:34

OMG I feel I have found my true home - other people who cannot stand 'Going on a Bear Hunt'. Shred every bloody copy I say.

I don't like Dr Seus either.

I don't mind Mr Men & I love a Squash & a Squeeze.

I hide books I don't like Blush

cookielove - Hug, I HATE that book. I gave it away, then found another copy lurking on the bookshelf. Gave that away - then LO always finds the damn thing at toddler group and presents it with a flourish.

TheEnthusiasticTroll · 05/07/2012 21:45

mr.men too and anything off the telle like dora or fifi, dd grown out of them now.

Just now I hate the guiness book of records. DD makes me troll thouigh it reading anything remotly silly and interesting. She is loving big books so I just ordered her evolution and engineers for christmas just to spice things up Grin

drjohnsonscat · 05/07/2012 21:51

Unanimous on Thomas the Tank Engine

So glad I'm not the only one who doesn't like Bear Hunt. I like everything about Michael Rosen except his books.

Also don't like any of The Little Princess books and can't bear Jane Horrocks voicing of it on tv.

BrigitBigKnickers · 05/07/2012 21:52

We're going on a bear hunt, we're going to catch a big one, what a beautiful day, we're not scared...

My DDs are now 14 and 16 and I can still recite the bloody thing from start to finish.

peeriebear · 05/07/2012 21:54

I hate the Disney books! They either drag on for ever, forcing you to make lame attempts at skipping bits (I'm looking at you, Aladdin), or they have changed bits of the story so DD says "But that's not like the film".

BikeRunSki · 05/07/2012 21:56

Any TV spin off.
Fox in Socks does my head (and tongue) in.

SwedishEdith · 05/07/2012 22:14

Yes, yes, yes to the deep tedium of Pippi Longstocking and Charlie and Lola. Also hated (and hid) You Choose and the bloody Charlie Stinkpants thing (which were her favourites) Why do they always love the worst ones/

battherat · 05/07/2012 22:37

Ooh. Ant & Bee. The little b*stards. I loved them when I was little & now DS loves them too. My husband told me that Ant & Bee go round the world is 92 pages long. I am not sure if he is being sarcastic but it definitely feels like that.

NoComet · 05/07/2012 22:52

Ant and Bee go to the Doctors was my younger sisters favourite. My mum's face told it all.

I quite like some of the Mr Men, Little Misses.

The rainbow fairies are dreadful.

I lost the only Disney tie in we ever had. It was dreadfully edited and made no sense.

Dr Seuss is my absolute nightmare. I'm dyslexic, I paraphrase things, poetry is bad, nonsense poetry - help!!

Sloobreeus · 05/07/2012 22:58

Long time ago now, but I loathed Topsy and Tim. The twee-est of twee. I am ashamed to admit that a pixie came and spirited them away...

JollyGoodFun · 05/07/2012 23:08

I don't mind Bear Hunt. But I've just realised that this is probably because I don't read all the words. We mainly just find the doggy on every page :D

We have one called Huggy Hippo. Thankfully Dh doesn't mind it too much. Ds loves it.

I can't get squash and a squeeze to scan right. Can't think of anything else I severely dislike though.

SpecialAgentSpade · 05/07/2012 23:10

My most difficult books are one that require accents. I am awful at accents, but my DS will not let me read fireman sam without one

seeker · 05/07/2012 23:13

I still remember "Bed Time with Baby Bop" a a Barney the dinosaur spin off that I had to read in a ritual fashion , 3 times before ds could go to sleep for what felt like millennia!

snaplockslags · 06/07/2012 00:32

I agree with Thomas the Tank though I do like talking about their facial expressions and what DS thinks they are feeling.
The other day when he saw a strained face on Diesel he said, (aged 2) 'it's a bit like when we're doing a poo!'

I hate Mr Men and Roary the bloody racing car

drjohnsonscat · 06/07/2012 09:59

I quite like trying out my range of Welsh accents when doing fireman sam. I'm channelling Anthony Hopkins for Stationmaster Steele and the Welsh one from Hi De Hi for Dilys Price. I may be making too much of this.
