Books to read to DD aged 12

My question is inspired by the "Do you read to your children" - I did do and still do for dd2 who is 7 but I don't for dd1 who is just 12.
I would like to start again - she is a good reader and reads a lot. I would like to read books to her "above" what she can read herself.
does anyone have any suggestions?

pride and predudice?
Oliver Twist?

Yes, those two definitely. I am planning to read A Christmas Carol to my 11 & 8 year olds over the couple of weeks before Christmas. What about Anne of Green Gables if she hasn't read it already? And definitely Little Women if she hasn't read that. Or I Capture the Castle? Sometimes I pick a book that is well within DD1's reading capabilities but she thinks she isn't going to like - often after a chapter or two she takes it off me and goes off to finish it herself.

Have a look at the romantic books thread I started a bit further down as well - people made some really good suggestions on that.

My ds, aged 11, loved Animal Farm (too lazy to read it himself), A Christmas Carol and Great Expectations. Oliver Twist is next.

This is a good thread. I still read to my nine-year-old, but my 13-year-old sacked me when he was six.

I'd love to read to them both together. Dickens sounds like a great idea.

Hello, Lady Laura. How's Phineas?

LadyGlencoraPalliser · 21/11/2008 11:57

I think they meet in Phineas Finn at some point. Surely they must, they move in very similar circles.

LadyLauraStandish · 21/11/2008 11:59

Well, they should meet but I can't recall the circumstances.

Phineas broke my heart - wail!

LadyGlencoraPalliser · 21/11/2008 12:01

Yes they are both at the fateful house party at Loughlinter.

LadyLauraStandish · 21/11/2008 12:13

You just looked that up, didn't you?

LadyGlencoraPalliser · 21/11/2008 12:14

Yup.

LadyLauraStandish · 21/11/2008 12:18

Okay, I've looked it up now as well.................

Clearly you should both be reading Can You Forgive Her to your DDs.
I have to confess I can't cope with AT now (hides head in shame at defection to sci-fi) but I loved CYFH & the Eustace Diamonds as a teenager.
