Are they any good?

I received one of their catalogues and the deals look too good to be true - is there a catch??

Ds has A High Wind in Jamaica coming, and have advance bought To Kill a Mockingbird for when he is older
The Secret Garden is almost obligatory for goddaughters

They are ace. No catch. Like an online bargain bookshop.

If you register with them and buy online you get book points everytime you buy books, so every now and then you can use the points to buy a free book. You might get points doing postal orders too, but I've only ever bought online so I'm not sure about that.

Full set of Enid Blyton "Mystery of ..." just arrived in office here

I am a Book People Junkie - they're not a rip-off slimy club AT ALL.

(The only tiny scruple is whether because their books are so marvellously well-chosen & bargainous, & the catalogue moves at such a good pace (so pretty much always something new to want), it affects what might be spent in little independent bookshops. However: that is (a) presuming the spend would go there otherwise (and not, eg, to Amazon); and (b) to add some MN-worthy moral complexity, I have seen at least one little independent bookshop stocking Book People-sourced reprints (at a mild mark-up from the catalogue).

They are great - i have been buying from them for years. No catch and the books are cheaper than just about anywhere else.

DesperateHousewifeToo · 17/10/2008 13:10

No catch but my Book People order did take quite a while to arrive (a few weeks).

We've recently moved to America, and have no access to The Book People. I feel whenever anyone writes here about how fabulous they are, or the new wonderful collections.
