MY ds2 loved Emil too! I don't think she will.

I wonder if she might like Secret Seven? Are all the girls lame in Secret Seven does anyone know?

ahundredtimes · 26/09/2008 12:45

Are there younger Jacqueline Wilson's? Do you know which ones?

DS1 had a big JW phase during which he was unphased by the pink and purple covers. But they all seemed to be about being homeless in a B&B or being bullied. I'm not sure I can quite do that.

I loved call me moll too. We read it. DS2 and I wiping away tears of laughter, her looking at us and smiling a little, sometimes.

ahundredtimes · 26/09/2008 12:48

DS2 adored Ruby too actually. And her upstairs kitchen and japanese slippers. And Hitch. And Call Me Moll.

He got it.

DD: 'I wonder why her spelling isn't very good?'

No, it is the correct term I'm afraid.

You could call it back cover copy, or inside jacket copy if you wanted.

PrimulaVeris · 26/09/2008 12:51

JW better than cb Cod!!

Try:

The Werepuppy - good for boys and girls (ds has this)

The Lottie Project

Best Friends

Biscuit Barrel ( books in one)

There's a bit of grit in there but nowt like most of the older ones

Hurrah, Thank you PV. Am noting down.

ahundredtimes · 26/09/2008 12:53

God DS1 absolutely adored them. Read them obsessively. Got them from library at school - he was told they were 'girls books' he said 'I don't care, they're good'.

PoorOldEnid · 26/09/2008 12:58

100x : dd1 (8 but reads below her age) didnt like Jacqueline Wilson

she loves the Worst Witch series

she really liked Jenny Nimmo the Owl Tree

Michael Morpurgo I belieeve in unicorns (i read this along with her)

I am reading her the little house on the prairie series atm which she LOVES Loves Loves

and, gulp, sniff, I read this to her when she was 7 - my lord it was one of the best kids books I've ever read

seeker · 26/09/2008 13:00

Don't forget Dick King-Smith - the Sophie books are BRILLIANT! So funny, and so well written! Perfect for read aloud from about 4 or 5, and read alone from about 7.

ahundredtimes · 26/09/2008 13:01

[writes down]

Thank you Enid. This is really helpful. That Miraculous Journey book looks beautiful.

PoorOldEnid · 26/09/2008 13:03

tissues at the ready

dd1 was like this from beginning to end

PoorOldEnid · 26/09/2008 13:04

and for independent reading at that age the Usborne short versions of classics (Black Beauty, A Little Princess) are great

Fennel · 26/09/2008 13:06

my dds (8 and 7) like some of the Michael Morpurgos, they particularly enjoyed "The amazing story of Adolphus Tips" which we read to them last year and since then they've both re-read it.

It's about a girl and a cat in wartime Devon.

Themasterandmargaritas · 26/09/2008 13:07

blimey i go away to make a lemon tart and here you all are chatting away....

We are limited in our options, we have the Red House international book club mag thingumy, so we can only choose from there. There are Morpurgo's Cock a Doodle Doo, which I think is too young for her, she is a very proficient reader. Butterfly Lion looks ok?

I'm afraid I am very judgemental and without even opening the cover of a JW book I would rather not go into them I have no good reason and totally illogical but then I am a woman after all.

On offer is the Mr Gum series, any good? One Dick King Smith book Horse Pie, but looks a bit babyish for dd? Spy dog is on offer as is Horrid Henry, Spy Dog looks fun, is it ok for girls?

Have you read your dd The Dolls House?

Mine loved it, and was . Has odd little pictures, is beautifully written and rather odd and marvellous. In retrospect I may have enjoyed it more than her. But we both cried at the end.

PoorOldEnid · 26/09/2008 13:09

is that rumer godden?

PoorOldEnid · 26/09/2008 13:09

dd1 loves old fashionedy books

ahundredtimes · 26/09/2008 13:09

Yes, you could give it a go - Spy Dog. My ds's LOVED but not sure my dd would. But that could be her. I think she might not have a silly sense of humour?

Butterfly Lion - great, go for it, especially if she's a good reader.
