My ten/nearly 11 year old is a bit meh about The Subtle Knife so looking for his next big read… He loved Lord of The Rings, Dexter Procter and the Percy Jacksons… and was quite keen on Swallows and Amazons, The Magician’s Nephew. I was wondering about Agatha Christie?

If he wants more fantasy, he might really like the Bartimaeus books by Jonathan Stroud. The 'Myth' series by Robert Aspirin is also a lot of fun, though it might be out of print.

And The Princess Bride by William Goldman!

Easy -- Ursula Le Guin's A Wizard of Earthsea (and its sequels). It has a wizard school, dragons, adventures, magic etc, and it's incredibly well written. Rosemary Sutcliffe's The Eagle of the Ninth? Susan Cooper's The Dark is Rising series? Alan Garner's The Weirdstone of Brisingamen?

The Dark is Rising series.

I think that Skandar series is quite similar to Percy Jackson.

My DS also enjoyed The Escape Room series by Christopher Edge, and The 1000 Year Old Boy,

The Amazing Maurice by Terry Pratchett was also a hit with him, I'm looking into other books by him that are suitable if anyone has any Pratchett suggestions

Nation by Terry Pratchett is excellent. The Bromeliad trilogy is also great fun. The rest of the Tiffany Aching series is a lot darker but the first one, Wee Free Men, should be fine.

The Skandar series was popular at that age. So was the Dragon Realm series, The Wizards of Once books, and Norse Mythology by Neil Gaiman (great as audiobook).
