Recommendations for engaging books for a 10 year old reluctant reader

My 10 year old son hates reading but I found two books Wonder and Boy at the Back of the Class which he has LOVED!

Now looking for more books that will engage and captivate him over the rest of the summer holidays. Any recommendations please share.

worth noting that he tried the hobbit, the explorer, northern lights and the wolf wilder and hated them all 😆

Ha! I was about to say Katherine Rundell, her books are amazing, but I see that didn't work.

After Wonder, we read Trash, which went down well and also Simon Mayo's Itch series. Not well written but very much liked.

David Almond is an amazing writer. We both loved Skellig and Kit's Wilderness.
Christopher Edge has some interesting books as well.

DS2 listened to a lot of audio, I used to just fire things at him, his favourites were Harry Potter (over and over) and Coral Island.

Varjak Paw by SF Said. Used this as a class novel and children asked for me to carry on reading during their break time.

Stig of the Dump
Wind in the Willows
Goodnight Mr Tom
Tom’s Midnight Garden

Try reading to him. At that age we definitely did Lord of the Flies, Wind in the Willows and To Kill a Mockingbird.
The first real book my DS read (after seeing the film) was Neverending Story.

Try books by Sally Gardner

Mulledjuice · 04/08/2026 11:37

Non-fiction?
Comics/ graphic novels?

Pretty sure the only thing my brothers read at that age (outside school) was the TV listings and Shoot! Magazine

(They both ended up with degrees)

Thank you! Also for you recommendation for audio books we haven’t given that a try yet!

Edited

He does read comics and non fiction but we wanted to try novels which he was so adamant he wouldn’t enjoy but he has and want to keep the mometum going!

My son enjoyed the Adventures on Trains series, MG Leonard & Sam Sedgman.

All kids books by Lissa Evans (fun, big hearted)

Second the recommendation for Sally Gardner too

Cosmic by Frank Cottrell Boyce (his other kids’ novels are great too)

Giant by Kate Scott

All these would tie in well with Wonder in terms of tone and feel

The two things that really hooked my reluctant 10 year old reader were the Wings or Fire series and Amulet series. Obviously Amulet are graphic novels, but he's read them again and again and it's not mostly pictures with a few words thrown in now and again.

I think your boy doesn't like very dense books but prefers more accessible reads with lots of action. Here are some recommendations.

The Night Bus Hero
The Boy Who Met a Whale
The Super Miraculous Journey of Freddie Yates
The Beast and the Bethany

Holes by Louis Sacchar. He will LOVE it!
