Moving from YA to adult fiction

Seeking good novels for a 14yo girl who’s a keen reader. She’s read loads of those YA books about groups of teens / murder/apocalypse etc and could do with branching out. My thoughts were:

A Thousand Splendid Suns
Great Gatsby
Catcher in the Rye
Tove Janson’s A Winter Book

but I haven’t read them in years and can’t remember if they’d be appropriate or not. She read Pride and Prejudice but didn’t massively enjoy it as it’s too period and intense.

Any ideas gratefully received!

These lists look good - I read the majority of what’s on them as a teen and found all suitable

PP suggestions above all look good too.
nothing wrong with contemporary adult fiction too of course, it just isn’t what I happened to read much as a teenager. And classics may need a bit less screening for gore/OTT sex.

Classic books all teens should own

From rib-tickling comedies to chilling gothic novellas, this must-read list is the perfect selection for budding bookworms.

A Thousand Splendid Suns?

I don't know about others but I found that a really traumatic read!!
I mean it was good don't get me wrong cos otherwise I wouldn't have felt that way. But towards the end I stayed up late just to finish it cos it was so traumatic I just wanted to finish it!

My 14 year old is enjoying Agatha Christie, particularly the Miss Marple's. She's recently read a few by Jody Picoult and loved them. Started with My Sister's Keeper. She's just finished Memoirs of a Geisha. She's just started Alexander McCall Smith's Number Ladies Detective Agency and liking it.
Her English teacher has been good at making recommendations. They ask each other every lesson what they are reading.

At that age I read
Danielle Steel
Jilly cooper the series with the girls name title , like Emily, Octavia
James Herbert

Another one who was reading Jilly Cooper at that age (school library until the librarian read them....). Was perhaps 15 when I started reading Wilbur Smith (not sure what my parents were thinking) Terry Pratchett?

@WashableVelvet thanks for the link @CharlieSays13I loved Memoirs of a Geisha but I was 21 when I read that. Mind you, maybe it hadn’t been published when I was 14!

@Iwanttobeafraser interesting points! I never liked fantasy and wasn’t into crime either. I’ll ask her about fantasy. Guess you don’t know until you try.

@IwanttobeafraserI will look up the Wyndham. I liked Cold Mountain. Did you read Tortilla Curtain? That might be a good one for her.
