Hello, my son loves autobiographies, think Going Solo by Roal Dahl type of books. Does anyone have any suggestions for similar or any other appropriate type for 10 year olds?

thanks!

What about some Bill Bryson? I suppose The Life and Times of the Thunderbolt Kid is most autobiographical but he might like eg A Walk in the Appalachians too. I don’t recall anything remotely inappropriate but maybe have a scan.

Gerard Durrell My Family and Other Animals?

I was an avid reader as a child.
The Endless Steppe by Esther Hautzig was a favourite.
I also read Black Like Me by John Howard Griffin which was probably completely inappropriate for an 11 year old but my parents did no censoring of what we read!

The Diary of Anne Frank.

My DS was probably 11 or 12 when he read (and enjoyed) Mud, Sweat and Tears by Bear Grylls

DS12 has really enjoyed reading Michael McIntyre’s autobiography, then not a typical autobiography as such but he’s enjoyed the Ben Fogle books about climbing Everest and crossing the Atlantic.

"The Endless Steppe by Esther Hautzig was a favourite." Unforgettable! @CrocusesFlowering

Bill Bryson’s Thunderbolt Kid has some slightly inappropriate-for-a-ten-year-old chapters about adolescence (trying to sneak into the stripper’s tent at the fair, stealing beer, trying to persuade girls to take their clothes off for eg). Plus a bit of swearing. I’d check if first to see if you are happy, I think some people wouldn’t be).

JG Ballard’s Empire of the Sun has a similar vibe to Going Solo, and though it’s a novel, it’s very autobiographical.

Or Robert Kee’s A Crowd is not company (might also have a bit of sweary language)

The Boy Who Biked The World

I loved Gerald Durrell's books and Gwen Raverat's 'Period Piece' around that age.

There is an edited version of A Street Cat Named Bob called 'Bob: No Ordinary Cat' which is ideal for this age group and my son loved.

How about Nelson Mandela, no easy walk to freedom?

My son loved. When Hitler Stole Pink Rabbit. One of my favourites too
